So why can't I download anything?

I used to be able to using btjunkie and Transmission but I'm now in the Soi 8 pub on a different and very reliable internet connection and still, nothing. I have deleted transmission and used Pirate Bay with Utorrent and once again, absolutely nothing other than the speed which is varying by the second as it was with Transmission but the download is at zero.

Update, it's now at 2% after 20 minutes, but my friend who is using a Windows laptop has already downloaded Super 8, Planet of the Apes and the entire 5th season of The Simpsons in the past eight minutes.

What on earth is going on, please help.
