Did you try turning off automated intalling of Windows updates?

Start button- all programs- Windows updates- change settings

    Set your updates to manual.

Then apply the ones that don't cause the problem.

For any one that is problematic (.Net framework by any chance?), google:

"Download KBnnnnnn Windows XP 32-bit" (modify where appropriate).

(Do it from a Download manager, as quite often you have to stop and restart to get the bastard things to download).

    Run it manually.

    (Probably) Reboot.

Bear in mind there are lots of complaints about the .Net Framework updates - sometimes it takes up to 45 minutes to install just one.

Do the updates manually one at a time.

That probably wouldn't help in this case.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to skip the Windows Update process completely, by downloading the update's .exe file and running it yourself.

    Example:

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2555917)

You can find the update's KB number from the list presented by Windows Update.

On my laptop, I've just reinstalled Win 7 as an update fucked it up. I pick and choose updates that I specifically need now to ensure up-to-date drivers, but the rest I'm not going to bother with as I only use the thing for watching movies on and as a PDF reader when I'm working.
You cannae live wiv 'em and ye cannae fucking shoot 'em

An update fucked it up? How? And why didn't you just go back to a Restore point?

Ah. It's a useful feature if you turn your PC off when it says "Do not turn off your PC".

I must've turned it off to save disc space or something equally as dumb.
