Samsung to battle iPhone 5 with new non-Galaxy smartphone?

We’ve been hearing whispers of a new Samsung Galaxy S II for weeks now, pretty much since the sexy super-smartphone was released.

Some reckon it’ll be a moderately improved Samsung Galaxy S II “Plus”, while others are touting a balls-out all-new successor.

The Pop Herald is the latest to get in on the S II rumour action, citing “a bunch of e-mails from credible sources living in Asia”. Love the phrasing, guys.

The latest rumours largely reckon we’ll see a Samsung Galaxy S II “Plus”, given that the specs won’t be dramatically different from the original Samsung Galaxy S II. Hell, it has a 4.3in display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 8MP camera. What more could you want?

Well, according to the sources, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and Android 2.3.4 featuring Google Talk with video support.

One source in particular suggested that Samsung might even drop the Galaxy branding. Hmm.

These rumours generally concur that Samsung’s motivation is, of course, the imminent launch of the iPhone 5, though it’s expected to be a modest upgrade from the iPhone 4.

Eldar Murtazin recently claimed that not only would Samsung release a Galaxy S III in autumn, but that the manufacturer would pump out a spanking new high-spec smartphone every six months to compete with the latest iPhone.

    Salt, anyone?

^ I don't know. The original SGS sure is a sweet piece of work. The more I use it the more I like it.
I don't like the idea of jumping on the techno-nurd bandwagon of replacing the handset every 6 months.
Since I got the SGS cheap I'm fixing on wearing it out, after I learn how to flog it with custom ROM's and various apps.
According to the XDA developers the original SGS is a pretty darned good platform.

What gets me with this technology shite is how far advanced they could really make a phone now, but instead they just release a little extra every 6 months

It's like when the DVD Player came out. Then 6 months later, ahh you can have a DVD Player/ Recorder now

I can't even be bothered carrying a mobile phone with a camera- although if I were still in business I'd be right into these toys. All credit to Apple for it's 'idea driven' successes, but at the end of the day Samsung et al are the way forward, because they use open (ie non-proprietary) systems. Cheaper, and usually better- put it this way, even if it is not better now, it will be tomorrow. Proprietary or closed systems can really only carve a long term market presence in niche markets, eg defence contracting or CAD/CAM- not that these are any any means small.

Apple uses it's own 'proprietary' system, just like Burroughs, DEC, Honeywell, NCR etc all had their own proprietary software they were plugging in ye olden days of computers. And look what happened to them.

These days I reckon you're making more of a statement carrying an old mobile phone than these 'latest fashion' handsets that face whitened secretaries are so obsessed about. Lets face it, they don't really need a spreadsheet or a database program- and chances are, neither do you.

    ^True,

My son wants a Blackberry now, he's bored of his I Phone 3GS
I offerd to swap him my Blackberry 9700, he laughed for a while
He wants a Blackberry Torch, looks quite nice, has a touchscreen and keyboard

    400 quid

He will have no need for all that office software, there are few apps, but he says all his mates have one and he needs the Blackberry Messenger

The skill of the marketer is to translate 'Utility' into 'Fashion' in peoples minds eye. Then they can charge what they want, and keep you buying their latest upgrades- because you "just gotta have 'em". The skill of the customer is to differentate the two.

He laughed at my 9700, there's no way he will accept a Curve
His haircut is £20 a time, the little poser

His Iphone should fetch £200 so I will either put £200 or the other way is to get it on contract and get the Torch free, but pay £25 a month for 24 months, then all his calls and stuff are sorted

RIM really are in the crap though. Their profit forecasts were worse than they even feared, they have nothing new coming to market of any note (people are starting to see what more they can do with their phones and are abandoning Bilgeberry in spades), and their share price is dropping faster than a whore's drawers.

I think Nokia should buy them, it's probably the only way either of them can survive.
