Internet on your phone in Thailand

So I finally got a mobile phone that has a qwerty keyboard, never bothered using the internet on my other phones as I can't use the poxy little keypad on those tiny little phones, plus the screens were too small to warrant even thinking about it.

So now I can connect to the internet using AIS, ie just my normal simcard, but obviously thats the expensive way, so I assume there are hourly and monthly options, what are they?

Willy, it is 10.30pm on a Saturday night, I'm sure they have staff there waiting for my call to tell me the benefits of each service they offer, at present I obviously pay by the minute, much better to leave it on continually

^The deeper you go into the site the more Thai it gets, looks like around 800baht per month or nothing money per hour, ie 20 hours 50baht, think I will go the hourly route.

I tried using the internet over the phone a year ago and the connection speeds were so slow to make unusable. 150kbps! It was like watching paint dry.

I've heard that some kind of new 3G network access is in the mist. Though I'm reading in the news the Thais are still squabbling over the licensing.
This stuff has gotten confusing lately where I don't understand what's going on exactly.
For people tp be using all these "wizz bang" hand held smart puter phones they have to have better connection speed than 150 kbps. They must be hooking up via wifi mostly.

AIS is advertising and selling 3G, but erm, we still have this problem that Thailand doesn't have 3G.

This is not really an answer, more so a further question, which might lead to the answer.
If a mobile phone can take two SIM cards, is it possible to use one slot for a standard SIM card and the other for an internet one?
If that is indeed possible, it would provide a very cheap solution to the problem.

Wilson, and I suggest you ring them during working hours, you know, be patient for 48 hours or so.

What do you want to use it for? Footy scores, news, that sort of shit?

I bought a DTAC card this year and they don't even appear to charge for Internet (whether this is promotional or not, I don't know). OK it's isn't the fastest, but it doesn't take very long to load http://pda.sky.com

But as it's prepaid, if they DO start to charge (and through the nose), at least I'll know about it pretty quickly.

Otherwise, definitely get on a plan, pay as you go internet is ridiculous in most countries.

Hidden underneath all the 800baht packages I should imagine, they seem to be keeping that one secret.

Probably charging per minute, thats what mine does at the moment, maybe the same as a phone call, ie 1baht, the hourly rates work out at something like 0.003 baht per minute if you buy 20, I assume no charge for the call is added onto that.

I think I pay 600bt a month with AIS for unlimited data and internet through the EDGE thingy.

It's mostly used for emails, occasionally used for google to settle an argument over a few beers in the pub and on occasion I tether it to my laptop if there's no wifi in the area. But never for any decent internet browse. The screen on my phone is too small, the reception is a bit pants and the browser on the blackberry sucks balls.

When the internet is connected through AIS it says "EDGE" on my screen.

When the internet is not connected through AIS it says "edge" on my screen.

That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

To be honest can't see the point using your mobile to access internet.I use my phone connected to my laptop in emergencies to connect to the internet.
I don't understand why they charge guess its Thai kids putting crap on their phones.
I use my mobile for sat nav never charge me for that.
