Turkish hackers target Greek Cypriot websites following attack on their basketball team

Turkish hackers have taken more than 100 Greek Cypriot websites offline in the past two days in revenge for an attack on Turkish basketball players in Nicosia last week, local media reported on Tuesday.

Websites of private Cypriot companies were blackened with a slogan "No terror in sports" in Turkish, Greek and English. A map of Cyprus was also shown on the hacked websites, but wholly covered by Turkish national flag.

The hackers also posted the emblem of Pinar Karsikaya, the Turkish basketball team which was attacked by Greek Cypriot fanatics following a European match played in the Cypriot capital on Dec. 21.

Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos was quoted as saying that the evidence indicates the hacking had originated in Turkey. Some affected companies have lodged complaints to the police's Anti-Cyber Crime Office.

Most of the websites, under a host server based in southern coastal city of Limassol, have returned to normal.

None of the hacked websites are governmental, said Cypriot police.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias last week condemned the attack on Turkish bassketballers by Greek Cypriot hooligans, adding what some "so-called fans" had done created problems for Cyprus and fostered "Turkish propaganda" against Greek Cypriots.

Greek Cypriot Apoel defeated guest team Pinar Karsiyaka by 82-80 in FIBA's EuroChallenge Cup G Group game. Immediately after the match, Turkish basketballers became the target of what looked like an "organized attack" by Greek Cypriot fanatics. They hurled plastic chairs, threw stones during the post match violence.

Several Cypriot police, including a female officer, were wounded as they escorted the Turkish players. One conditioner of the Turkish team injured his left hand during the violence.

United Nations peacekeeping forces in Cyprus also intervened at the request of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot authorities.
