    Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" released

Well 10/10/10 was a red letter day in the Ubuntu world. Not only did they release Ubuntu itself, but many of its derivatives have been announced too:

    Lubuntu
    Kubuntu
    Mythbuntu
    Edubuntu
    Xubuntu

I'm downloading MythBuntu now to try out on my new 'puter when it's delivered this week.

Links to all of these, courtesy of today's Distrowatch:

    Download Ubuntu
    Download LubuntuDown
    Download Kubuntu
    Download Mythbuntu
    Download Edubuntu
    Download Xubuntu

These are all 32-bit versions; if you want 64-bit where available, have a look at the Distrowatch link.

Like all Ubuntu's, it's gone through a steady and planned process of Alphas, Betas and RCs, so any major bugs will already have been ironed out.

A brief summation of the improvements states:

The release, which has the codename Maverick Meerkat, brings with it a number of key features, most notably cloud integration and compatibility with other operating systems including Windows, Android and iOS.
They've updated both the installer and the software updater to make them easier to use.

They've put in a new Evolution which is apparently significantly faster.

They've updated the interface in Netbook Remix - God knows that was long overdue.

    • On the Desktop: GNOME 2.31, KDE 4.5.0b, Xfce 4.6.2, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1, X.org server 7.5
    • On the Server: Apache 2.2.16, PostgreSQL 8.4.4, PHP 5.3.3, LTSP 5.2.4
    • “Under the hood”: Linux 2.6.35.3, GCC 4.4.4 (default) / 4.5.1
      (optional), eglibc 2.12.1, Python 2.6.6 (default) / 3.1.2 (optional)

Had a quick look at the Kubuntu LiveCD yesterday, KDE 4 has improved out of sight since the first release
