    Chassis intruded - Fatal error

    Sounds bloody awful doesn't it.

Was in the house dsiconnecting the phone line and shutting the windows when I saw a flash near my computer, I think, it was so quick. Wasn't expecting the lightning so quick as it hadn't even started to rain.

Is my computer fatally done for?

A quick rummage through Google leads to very techie talk of jumpers and caps and RMA which I do not understand.

If you can "Google" after the 'strike" then your PC is okay! If your PC had received a direct hit - you would have known about it - much more than a "flash in the pan"! The last strike we had close by took the ridge tiles of the house next door - and "blew" my modem!

That's why surge protectors are used in Thailand.

A surge happen few weeks ago at my place. All equipment connected to UPS but not the modem and router !

The power supply of one PC gone, even it was supplied from UPS, probably the surge came through the modem then travelled by the ethernet cable to PC and router...

Was a 7K damage, 3 apparels, power supply PC, Modem and router... now i disconnect all once thunderstorm starts, even i added a UPS to modem and router!

I went to local 'puter shop to check the error message before starting to panic.

No UPS for me as I aint got any faith in Thai batteries. If a storm is brewing I always disconnect the router/phone, however this strike came out of the blue. In previous strikes the Ethernet Lan board has failed so I took it to the shop and it tested OK.

Next I took the chassis and router just had a funny feeling about it, and sure enough we proved it ( router )was done for. Only had it new the week before to replace the old black Zycel.

The computer is OK and went and got a replacement router from 3BB for 100 baht.

Could I buy my own wireless router and do away with all these wires and how much would it cost ?
Presumably I would still pay my monthly fee to 3BB

From now on I'm unplugging everything.
