At the moment I can get a fairly decent discount on Macs. A 13in Macbook Pro is about 850quid.
What non-Mac pc can I get for that money with similar orbetter specs?

I bet you only started this thread to give Butterfly and Daffy something to do this weekend.
Nope.
Need new laptop after Lenovo smashed mine up and won't accept responsibility for doing it.
At 850 I would buy it without hesitation.
Good price - go for it.
The biggest change you will have to make is to unlearn a lot of rubbish that Windows trained you to do :-)
As a public service I will provide Butterfly's contribution to this thread:
-----------
Why buy something retarded and backwards like a MAC. MACs are only for retards and gays, as we all know.
Go ahead and make a bit big mistake and listen to all the MACtards - it only means that I will once again be right, when you return in a couple of weeks whining what a piece of crap that MAC is, and how you wish you could go back to using Windows XP (which is the only really solid operating system) or something great like Ubuntu Linux (despite me having demonized it at one point, then lauded it, then demonized it again - I was confused, sorry).
But if you buy the MAC and like it, then you deserve hanging out with all the MACtards because you are gay.
-----------
I think that's pretty accurate, right?
Dear Squirrel, I have a feeling after knowing you all those years on Teakdoor that you will be very pissed once you realize the Mac will not deliver on its promises,
I can see a thread coming from you ranting about how ineffective they are, and you will be right.
So please buy one, I can see at least 2 or 3 threads coming from recent mac buyers who will complain no end on why they are broken or not working as they should. Great comedy. Quack Quack will be on override mode and I will be sitting watching the show and eating popcorn.
Yours truly,

tard, I only acknowledge that Ubuntu did enough progress recently (v9.10) to become a viable replacement for WinXP and even MacOS X, before that, it was rubbish for Linux geeksOriginally Posted by DaffyDuck

It's unfortunate that when you called Ubuntu 'another piece of crap' and 'it's not even free' that 9.10 was already out - bummer for you, the man with no memory.
Looks like I got you pretty much spot on in my simulation, though. Quite predictable, you are.

right, since 9.10 has been released a few weeks ago, and my rants on Ubuntu were about 6.10, quite a while wasn't it (last year).Originally Posted by DaffyDuck

I had to take off BF from my ignore list as it's such a good laugh reading his posts in the computer section.
And then you were using this distro released in 2006 ? Why not the 8.04 or 8.10 released last year ?Originally Posted by Butterfly
^ maybe it wasn't last year, it was more like 18 months ago, release was then 6.10 or 7 can't remember exactly. Anyway, it didn't cut it then.
Unlike the other Linux geeks and other Mac virgins, I can't spend time every year to test some silly Linux distro.
One thing I wasn't disappointed when I got my Mac mini was to see how "dysfunctional" the Finder remained to be after all those years since the original release of OS X. Kudo for apple for not evolving one bit while the rest of the computer world does
With Ubuntu 9.10, OSX is completely irrelevant.
You do tend to exhibit convenient amnesia in these times, don't you?
Doubtful that it was 18 months ago, seeing as how I wasn't even on this board 18 months ago.
6.10 - released in October 2006
7.10 - released in April of 2007
Neither of which I was around these parts
We were discussing Ubuntu 9.04 at the time, released in April 2009, which you declared 'a piece of crap' and 'probably costs too much' (demonstrating that not only didn't you know anything about Ubuntu back then, but continuing to demonstrate that you still don't have a clue - because you can't even describe what it is that allegedly makes the current version os much better.
Once again, Monsieur Papillon caught sans pantalons...
Wow, you *do* know that we are up to 10.6 now? You are discussing conditions from 10.0 (if not even pre-10.0), over 8 years ago.
The world has moved on since then.
Yes, agreed that Ubuntu has made their interface more OS X like, and their desktop more Finder like (you *do* know that this is one of the declared goals of the Ubuntu distribution, which you so laud, BTW --- Pwned, again!)
Agreed - he is like the resident village idiot, albeit with less redeeming qualities, and eliciting less sympathy from the townspeople... Though his constant missteps are amusing. I might even invite him to my birthday party to entertain.
BF, you always complain about Finder, what exactly do you find so bad about it? (serious question)

but seriously, it's not functional. The old Finder had more merit though. This is the old NEXT interface that nobody liked and that Steve Jobs spend years developing. I guess he didn't want to let it go and had to force fed everyone with it.
yep, I tested the thing early 2007, I still have the ISO somewhere, so it was indeed 6.10Originally Posted by Wallalai
actually, if it wasn't for the stupid OSX Finder, I would use the Mac mini for more than HTC, just for amusement value. But using that thing just make OSX a bigger pain.
What do you mean? It finds things. What do you want an application called 'Finder' to do?Originally Posted by Butterfly
it's not really a finder, it's a file explorer, aka the Desktop finder in old Mac speak.
Very difficult for navigation, not practical, button not placed logically and confusing as it puts not useful functions in key locations. Basically the buttons are there to make it pretty and looks like you can do a lot of things, but in reality you don't use them and it does fuck all.
On the other hand, Unbuntu did an excellent job by simplifying the interface and making it very functional. Clean cut, no silly functions that nobody uses.
I bought a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2,26Ghz 13" last June and I'm really happy with it.
I really like the backlit keyboard, the multi-touch trackpad and the long lasting battery. MAC OS X Snow Leopard works like a charm on both my laptop and my iMac.
I've just bought Path Finder to replace the Finder, cheap for many useful features. Path Finder 5 by Cocoatech
