    Dsl - Again!

Quick question for you who know!
As you know I posted a few times about DSL dropping out.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If my connection drops, as it keeps doing especially with torrents, even after reducing connections and uploads and downloads etc. ad nauseum.

I get a red light on the router, the internet light, but when this light is red I can ping the router with no loss, secondly, I noticed that when the router goes into re-boot, the modem ethernet light (it is in bridge mode) goes from constantly flashing, to a solid green, until the router reconnects, do you think the problem lies with the modem or the router or TOT.

They all reconnect automatically, I don't need to switch anything off, but it takes about 10 minutes for the torrents to re-establish...any ideas?

I was told they are also blatant lairs as when you buy a higher bandwidth package you still get a 2mb line

You must be the bringer of doom, the minute I tried to read your post the line dropped again.

I am not sure that TOT oversubscribe, as DSL is a package that is individually controlled, i.e. you really are supposed to be able to acess the bandwidth they allocate, and recently, I must admit, I have been able to get over 2.5MB on download speedtest, and over 300K up, the problem I have is that it keeps hanging when I really exploit these loads.

I really just want to find out if it is (as you say) lies, or a technical problem.

The only times I suffer is with torrents, I "sometimes" can download a file from an FTP site at 200KB/s with no problem, then I get on a torrent and get to 150KB/s and it hangs.

The strange thing last night was I had a few downloads going, and I am on a #MB down 512 up, but I was getting over 4.5MB download for almost half an hour, until it hung again!

I think the next point of call is getting rid of the TOT Modem, because if I connect to that on it's own I get almost dial up speed, hook in the router and it flies (with the modem in bridge mode)..it is obviously going to be a long drawn out affair that despite the TOT advertised rates of 590/mnth, that is actually nearer 800 - as there is support etc, added on, but with very little support. However, I will continue to GNASH at their heels, and not give up until I find the root cause!

Whay really pisses me is that "DOWN THE HATCH #7" Was supposed to be finished half an hour ago!

My D-Link DSL-526B provided by TOT does that if there is any momentary blink or reduction in the line voltage whatsoever. Obviously it's very low quality. I'll notice the fan I use with my computer to keep it cool will slow or stop for a second and the connection is lost. I live in Sattahip and the voltage into the house varies. It does not bother a quality appliance like my Sony big screen, but the cheap off brand TV in the front room shuts off or the picture gets small. Does not affect my computer because it's a laptop with a battery. If you have a volt meter (about 150 baht in a hardware store) try seeing if your disconnects are linked to a drop in line voltage. If it is, get yourself a better router or a power supply for your present router. GOOD LUCK TO YOU.

Actually, I think TOT actively blocks torrents, if you look on the back of their printed bill there is someting in Thai that refers to torrents, and it is "between the hours of 12.01pm and 6.00 am, sorry my Thai is not that good and the wifes eyes are fading, but if someone who has 20:20 vision can decypher that small print on the back of the bill, I am sure it relates to torrents.

If it is in fact the case, then you may as well by a dial up 56K modem, as who needs an internet connection solely within Thailand that gives 3MB??? can you honestly think of anything you need a 3MB connection within Thailand for? The first thing I do is check the news...like from a Thai website!!! If you could read the language, understand the language, the only crap they put out is the usual slap bitch screaming banshee crap like the TV

I can do a speedtest here and get 2.5MB, but, should I try and connect outside of this great bastion of freedom, I am lucky (Hong Kong) to get anywhere near 100KB/s

Torrents...have you seen many good movies available from a Thai hosted site?

    What's the point!

This is a cheap package, bottom of the barrel with very little international bandwidth. I think you should upgrade you package so it gives you the performance I think you are after.

To be fair, that 590 baht package is shite with heavy contention, which is a high number of other customers that you share 1mb bandwidth with. its probably 20 to 1

You should spend more and move onto a better package that has maybe a contention ratio of 8 to 1.

And living in the sticks in chiang Mai, and getting the first landline in 10 years, could you "suggest"a package?

Maybe a broadband 20Mb link ? What we have is what we have got, this is the Number ! around
    my neck of the woods!

Im with spin, the cheapo packages are in essence over subscribed.

As a comparison, i was on the cheapo CAT 2mb/1mb connection at (from memory) 800b per month, it was terrible, i swapped to the more expensive package (same advertised speeds) [at] 1800b per month, it has been 99.99% reliable 24/7/365, i have no issues downloading 1gb per hour any hour of the day (rapidshare), since ive been on this plan ( 12 months now) it has only had 1 period of downtime and that was less than 30minutes.

Where we are we have no real option, 2MB, 3MB or 4MB, 590/690/790 Baht/Mth, actually we are lucky, we just got the first phones here in the past 10years..so it's gone from Mega fuckin retard to advanced tecnology in the space of a few months - and this seems to be the problem, they have flung this new technology at a bunch of buffaloes! The Kwai only understand basic "connections", not quality of service - they seem only capable of checking whether point A is connected to point B, rather than being able to test if data can travel at the advertised speeds between A and B - it'll come, in the next 10-5 years! - the meters they use....and the screwdrivers..these Kwai are real highso.

It's the 3Mb Platinumcyber, gold is 2Mb. It feels more like coppercyber, or nonferrouscyber at times.

Have you enquired to see if you can have CAT internet down your TOT phone line?. You would need to ask about that at the nearest CAT offices.

They do better packages with less contention.

Do you mean that you can take out a subscription with CAT on a TOT line....does this not lead to motorbikes gunning you down? I have this vision of the 60 year old TOT boss from San Patong, dressed in black on the back of a Honda Wave, brandishing a catapult, chasing me through Chiang Mai ....ploating ball bearings through my windows!

Thats right, providing CAT offer the service in your area..... why not have a thai speaker call them, the numbers for CNX are on this page

Sometimes CAT will run their own cable to your house, dedicated for internet and their package for 1890 baht per month "premier 2mb" has low contention ratio at the international pipe.
