    Converting Video Torrent downloads

Ok, so now the DSL is working, I download some torrent videos in AVI format, normally about a gig. I can play these on the com using VLC player. Now to the two problems I have encountered.

1: Using TMPGenc, re encoding the files, some of the files have no audio??? (The DVD option in TMPGenc (using the wizard) creates the MP2V video file and a WAV file, in some instances, the WAV is silent.. any ideas?

2: Again using TMPGenc to recode for DVD, when I try to recode say a 1GB video file, it estimates the output setting to be 9GB!!! again, using the wizard and encoding a standard AVI file? How come it tries to encode it to this size?

If I recode for SVCD, I can do it in the normal way, and it will require two cds, but DVD?

Is it that the original rip was from DVD 9 or something?

    Appreciate any info, thanks

You can adjust various criteria in TMPGenc to alter the output filesize to fit on DVD but the default 'MPEG for DVD' should do it automatically as long as you're not trying to fit a 20 hour movie onto it.

you could learn to use virtual dub and the plugins needed. - my first DVD to divX rip was done with that on a p3 733 , took about 4-5 goes to get it right at 27 hours each time

you can have multiple DAT files ( the MPEG2 component of a VCD ) on a DVD and then play it on a DVD player - just make sure the names are in the sequential order you desire
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

All I am trying to do is re code an AVI torrent, that consists of 800 -1.5 GB of AVI into either a 4GB DVD or a couple of 700MB SVCD Files, hell the originals are small enough in most cases to fit straight on there. Go to encode, it wants to turn a 600 MB file into a 9GB file...software written by pricks!

Look at Nero, it's SHITE, it cannot convert, it cannot re author, and these fucking geeks want 100 bucks for some lame shit that you need to go and buy some more lame shit just to get in the right format!

It takes a day just to convert and re authour a movie, only to find it doesn't work, no audio or some other problem.

To be honest, once you start fiddling with any of the TMPG settings, as far as past experience goes, it never works! You ever go to their "HELP" sites or "HELP" forums...theyare on another planet! They couldn't write a simple user guide to save their lives, sad fuckers!

Just tried encoding a movie for my son tonight, everything seemed fine, finished product - NO AUDIO!

And, one more question, why would uTorrent put a play button on their menu ? Have you ever EVER found that it can actually play anything? They may as well rename it "STOP"

And as for that piece of SHIT software "Winamp"...if I could do without Wbias, it would be off the computer faster than Bob's your Uncle, it hangs more than Albert Pierpoint!

You know, if I was a clever person, I'd write a software program for idiots, that worked every time, instead, we have GEEKS writing garbage that the layman has to try and understand!

Would you pay 100 bucks for NERO... fuck, let it burn!

So, let's take a real scenario, I downloaded Public Enenmy, came in an AVI format, Disk 1 and Disk 2 .

You cannot copy Disk 1 or Disk2 to a CD, you have to reformat it! Disk one turns an 800MB file to a 9GB file if you want to use NERO! and about a 3 week recode!

    maybe you need a MAC

the play button will allow you to preview a movie if you have configured utorrent to download in order.

what are you trying to play the AVI files on ? the avi files are probably MPEG4 xvid files and many DVD players in the last 3-4 years will play them no worries.

does your dvd player have a usb port ?

OK, it's late but is there any software for macs that can covert all the different torrent formats you get? Video, music books?

I keep getting wierd formats then google it and get something that can deal with it but it would be great to have a all in one?

BTW, I am a pretty hopeless geek

Yessir, use the same ISO MAGIC for a 4 GB thumb drive and play them (AVI) format direct through the USB port on the Video Player. Fantastic piece of software, together with the free MagicDisk you can even create a virtual drive and install direct from an ISO file without the need to burn a CD or DVD.

Yes it does, do you mean I can just copy the AVI file (mpeg 4) and play it on the DVD?

Now that is something I like the sound of!
So you create an ISO from the original (reduced size AVI) and load it onto a usb stick as an ISO, then play it from the USB port?

This sounds too good to be true!

Thanks for that - I'll give it a try, sadly I only have 512MB stick, but if it works, this is the way to go!

From some of the other posts, it appears you are correct.
In my ignorance I believed I had to get everything into like a 4.7GB DVD format to play it, but from what I have read here, it does indeed seem like I am wasting my time!

MM: if the file you downloaded as torrent is a DVX or AVI - there should be no need to even burn a Disk (be it CD or DVD), copy direct on an USB stick (Handy Drive) and play via the USB port in the player.
Additionally you could buy a 1 TB USB drive and record on that all movies and use it as player with the same USB drive. Really very easy!

Thanks, I am beginning to get the picture (thanks guys!) I have been spending 5-6 hours re encoding 1GB AVI Files into mostly unusable DVD files, all for nothing! It's amazing what you learn eh?

I just tried turning an AVI File into an ISO, no encoding nothing, then burning it onto a dvd rw - put in the machine, the machine did a few things that it normally doesn't do with DVDs, it started initializing....then, played the movie perfectly!

I could cry, the ammount of headache and wasted time, all for nowt!

Thanks for all the info, appreciated! believe me!

I am now going to try putting just the AVI file on the DVDRW and see if it plays that.

I think the best way is going to be a memory stick - quick!

I've been using the memory stick route with avi files and it works perfectly.

My newest discovery is the 'Devices' option on the new version of Vuse.

I just turn on 'Enable Media Sharing' on my PS3 and then a PS3 icon appears in the left hand tool bar in Vuse on my computer. Then I just drag and drop anything I want to watch into the PS3 icon and BOOM!!! There it is on my TV screen. I love it!

you just might want to google your player and check if it will handle a usb mem stick over 2gig - unless you have a 4gig handy to just try.

and you should find your DVD will just play the avi from a usb stick

anyone shopping for a new DVD player now should be looking to see if they also decode H264 and MKV .

I am a bit behind the times you see, my methods date back to what I had to do 10 years ago, and the video formats that were around then. Simply burning a VCD was a major project.

5 Years here with no telephone and no internet have not helped.

The previous DVD players I owned would only play DVD/VCD/SVCD, it is only in the last year that I bought a new player (at 1/10th the price of the old Pioneers I had) that I even saw one with a USB port. To be truthfull, I only thought that the port was used for memory sticks from Digicams.

I've learned more here in half an hour than I have in the past 5 years! Thanks a lot, if only you know how many hours I have spent taking AVI files, re encoding, then using DVD authoring software, then burning them....Jesus, the damn machine could play them "as is" - there's no fool like an old fool eh!

Now, here is a strange thinf I found with VLC player, in some instances, if it cannot load the file you specified, it reverts to loading the videao from a previous file, but entitles it as the file you are downloading!

I downloaded a rather "Spiffing" title today - go have a look - not for the squeamish - "begotten"

but when you tried to preview this using VLC it kep loading "Haunting in Connecticut" but the title for the file was "Begotten".

It was only after the entire file downloaded that it was possible to actually view it.

It is the perfect movie for a family get together!
