converting Dat to Avi file software?

Been looking all afternoon but all the downloads I have found are pay up, or will only convert so far as an example then pay up. Not really worth forking out for as I only want to do half a dozen. Anyone know of any totally free software to do dat- avi converting?

A .dat (in a video CD) *is* a .AVI file. Just rename it, no need to convert.

You can compress an AVI smaller typically (depends on which codecs are used). But just renaming it will work as your media player will work out for itself what it needs to play the file (this might not work for some hardware media players though)

those VCD dat file are MPEG , not avi - avi is a container format

Audio Video Interleave (also Audio Video Interleaved), known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback.

Might want to check out Format factory as well. It changes most video, photo, and audio files you have.
Its free but just make sure you un tick any boxes that offer to make a certain search engine your default or to change your home page. other than that works a treat !

No, I think it was the fact that you can't tell the difference between .mpg and .avi.
