I'll be the TD True Internet Guinea pig

    Ok here it goes.

My 5mb 2200 baht internet is running like a paraplegic turtle and I am fed up. I have paid as much as 3500 for a business package and that was not much better.

Mrs. Chi was raising heck with True and they suggested I PAT LESS to get better service.

So after this post, I am rebooting and we will be signed up for the 1200 baht 8MB service.

What do you think? Will a cheaper True internet package in Thailand provide me with lightning service?

Chi, moving back to Bangkok and we just signed up, True has a deal going for 2gb WiFi with a router for 100 baht which you own after a 1 year contract. The package cost about 950b per month, and for that money IMO at least it makes it easier to swallow the shit there doling out rather than paying top dollar and still getting sewer water..just a thought..Don't know if this package is available to current victims of the vampires or just new ones, but maybe worth a try anyway.

I can see by Thai logic where a less expensive package might provide better service as the limited business packages are the equivalent of downtown Bangkok traffic in rush hour..over used and not well routed with too many U turns..

Sounds like you've been the guinea pig already. You've paid the same amount in a month on internet as I have on renting a house. I think bottom line is internet here in general is poor, they can claim 5mb etc but that will be inside Thailand, international is a different ballgame altogether.

I have True 1024/512 - I get what I pay for though it can choke in the afternoons .

I also traffic shape in my router , controlling your outgoing requests can make sure you incoming queues are not overloaded which causes waiting packets to be discarded and then have to be requested again.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Hmmm.... I'm still paying 1150 for the 2.5MB service. Their website is out of date (of course!). Think I'll call them tomorrow and see if they can offer a better deal.

When mine works, it works well. But I have problems with interference from street lights in the evening (I own 800 meters of cable that runs along the access road out to the main road as they wouldnt pay to install it and it's the lights on the polls which cause the interference).

if the cable has a shield - some foil or mesh around the cable inside the outer insulating sheath , you can create a drain by connecting it to an earth stake .

my 54GL controls the modem with all the PPPoE settings
the tomato firmware has quality of service setting , where you tell it how much bandwitdh you have up and down - minus 5-10% for room to manipulate - you can also tell it what stuff has priority and relegate your P2P to lowest priority etc
    plus there is more
it has TCP Vegas - which basically looks at the timing between requests being sent and their arrival back and through some extremely complex algorithims decides how fast it all should be happening.

Hmmm... hadn't thought of that. Don't think it's shielded though. Looks like the standard heavy gauge 2 wire cable they use (with the extra non-signal wire to give it more stength). Have to have a climb up the nearest pole to take a look.

chitown hasn't been online at all since the OP.

I assume it's totally broken now, so the experiment must be deemed a failure.

Clearly a trap. True has managed to rid itself a constant complainer by giving him into a "deal to good to be True". His next post will be from jail after being arrested in front of the True building for demonstrating without a permit.

what kind of idiot pay 2200 THB a month for ADSL in Thailand and expect it to work beyond the 2MB set limit of the Thai ADSL network ?

I have tomato 1.23 with openVPN server on my main unit and I have openWRT Kamakazi 8.09 on another I have modded with the SDcard slot which I am playing with

simple and easy to flash via the GUIs and I also have flashed several times using tftp at boot as it waits 2 sec for you to do it

highly recommended - turn your 60 dollar unit into a 600 dollar unit

Well, back into True territory and after having my service hooked up almost 2 weeks ago and customer service telling Mrs. DF that everything is up and "plug in" ready to go.. I get in town and after much fun with moving companies and getting over severe depression and anxiety issues moving back into the dumps of Bangkok I try my new high speed WiFi last night and nothing...

Everything says it's go but no DSL light on the router and it says if no DSL light phone line must be foked.. Where the fok is that phone packed again?? anyway no need I have a trusty phone line polarity tester and know where I packed that so off I go to dig it out.. Now no one has been living in this house for 2 years and we were last here so no reason the phone line polarity is not correct, right? Well as it turns out it is wrong and I open the phone jack and it follows the color code?? WTF?
seems someones been fecking with it obviously up stream somewhere? Sometimes when polarity is reversed it kicks you off the system until it is corrected and then needs to reboot so I think this might be the problem and go to sleep on it, long hard, depressing couple of days and 1:30AM getting to sleep finally around 3 with a couple of other move in comforts dealt with.. wake up this morning, try again and still no !#[at]!#[at][at] Internet.. have better things planned today like buying groceries for one, not waiting all day for a tech while my 1500 baht per day rental sits in the driveway..

Of course call True, tell them exactly what the problem is and get the usual song and dance and some crap about having a tech out here at THEIR convenience after this SHOULD have been checked with a lap top from their own tech weeks ago after installation so if there was issues we could address them before our arrival especially since I have some critical exchanges in the works by email and did everything possible to avoid the delay.

after some intense negotiations to rival the North Koreans (reserved terminology, more like something along the lines of "Okay Honey just tell the ![at]#%$$ to come and pick up this shit equipment and cancel the service") we finally get a promise to have a tech in 15 minutes to check the line up stream and guess what?? after their threats to charge us etc. it is a crossed line or some other garbage at the switching station, more like they forgot to actually activate the account 2 weeks ago like requested and oh! BTW they sent Mrs. DF a confirmation SMS that it was operational on the 29th..

problem solved!!!! have DSL!! But can't connect still.... another long term phone conversation and go through all of the rubbish about account info etc.. get another tech. and he comes out in 15 minutes and then spends another 1.5 hours getting no where..
calls another Tech. the "professional", so why didn't we get him in the first place queries Mrs. DF...good question I tell her... I have 3 "professional" techs huddled around my computer and not much is happening except a few comments about downgrading to XP from Vista (not because Vista is so bad mind you just because none of them ever trained on it and I should be a good conformist and conform to what is easiest for them to program, feck that customer service shit!) 2 more hours goes by, my "to do list" is rapidly getting decimated and no grocery shopping but damn it! I'm going to be online tonight come hell or True internet service!!!

I forgot to mention that the first tech could not find the WiFi/Lan switch on the front right corner of my lap top and no one even asked me?? his "professional" tech had to find it and it took him 20 minutes and my flash light..What does that have to do with Vista I wonder? but realistically it wasn't that hard to locate if anyone had ASKED me?

I'm watching these techs who don't speak native English let alone read it jump around these menus at warp speed and question do they really know what they are reading? maybe they're just so "professional" they know what the menu says? they read faster than me, it's really quite impressive for non native speakers .. after enough of that and going through all the same menus continuously Mrs. DF tells them to slow down and let me have a chance to read the info. on the self diagnostic program provided with Vista which provides options for repair and low and behold there lies the answer that has been scanned past more times than I can count..

The security program on my computer will not allow them to connect with the WIFI through an unsecured connection until they have enabled the security and that has to be done with the LAN line can't be done while trying to connect by WIFI.. Eureka! 10 minutes to do a self install by a home user that took 3.5 hours with 3 Thai "super" techs coupled with my own self taught computer experience in the end.. No way was this going to be any sort of manual install by this user nor many others..

Until shortly before that point the lap top was on another part of the table that made it very difficult for me to see what was being done especially with 3 techs huddled around it.. once we changed it's position and I could actually see clearly I pointed out the issues I noticed and well, finally! my "free installation and 100 baht wireless router" cost us 1500 baht in car rental and hours of aggravation and only one thing accomplished that should have been a 'plug in' and was "set up for use" 2 weeks ago.....

I might also point out that the living room A/C also took a dump in the middle of all of this and I had to supervise a revamp of another A/C we had in spare and also deal with that being done properly... I can problem solve and multitask though.. so now at least those 2 issues are resolved, though neither one was on my agenda for an already full day..

BTW on the A/C, though this is not related to the OP, they kept trying to tell me why that compressor/condenser unit wouldn't work and how BTU's were different (not enough, but without really even looking at it) etc. and after install it is working tons better than it's predecessor as well as being quieter and there is no difference in BTU's as well as the brand was identical, in the end that was all Thai speak, I knew this but was having too much fun watching them try to sell me something I didn't really need.., dumb farang and all that..

They were daft too though as I just bought 2 (thank goodness for that) new main fuses, I tell them not to turn on the A/C as there is a dead short in the compressor and they just watched me put in a new fuse and promptly turned on the A/C and blew my fuse, along with my new house main fuse too......
I told him he had to replace it as he looked at me all puzzled like to put in the second fuse, so he goes out and disassembles the blown fuse and hot wires it and puts it back in. me thinking he is going to replace it later after they're done, they didn't and left a hot wired main fuse in my box rendering it completely useless for it's purposes.

right now my lap top is hopping pretty well, for the moment I'm satisfied, wait and see with the PC but if my lap top is this fast the PC should be a treat.
some phrases in the user agreement were a concern though but no real choice at the moment so agreed anyway..

It went along the lines and extemely sarcastically with gratitude for True Visions TV things such as "thank you for showing me that movie from 20 years ago at primetime as I missed it's release when it came out, I have noticed I can watch it 20 times this week, I will head home later to catch the ending as now I can watch the movies in mini series during the week"

maybe I live in an alternate reality

my TRUE 1024/512 connection works fine - get some slowdowns and the latency is a bit high for ADSL , though I mark that down to their bluecoat proxy.

I get 100 Kbytes via HTTP download from sites with the bandwidth

I have my bittorrent throttled to 80 Kbytes down and 45 Kbytes up when I sleep and it goes full speed when there a good seeds.

the main problem I have had with it has been attributable to the phone cable in the house to the street connection - once replaced everything was fine.
