    Virus

picked up something this morning, its wiped all the startup Icons off my desktop, got AVG running by task manager and it detected 14 Trojans and scripts. Cleaned them all out but still no desktop icons. Any help on how to get them back?

    Go into Program Files
Select the exe file for a program, right click/send to/desktop short cut

    Have a look in
    C:\Documents and Settings\peterpan\Desktop
(peterpan = whatever your logon is)

See if there is anything in there

    Blank Desktop
    The Problem:-

When I boot up all I get is a blank desktop. No icons or anything at all. If I press CTRL +ALT+ DEL Keys,I can open the task manager, but am still unable to bring up a desktop.

    Resolution:-

To resove this issue you have to create a new Explorer.exe process from Task Manager.

    Start>Run>regedit>OK
Open Registry Editor and see if shell ="explorer.exe" .
Navigate to the following location:-[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Explorer.exe is used for the Windows desktop GUI.

Have you tried to run another antivirus to see if there is some virus or trojans left that AVG couldn't find ?

I can get to here alright, but can't see any option to get explorer.exe and wouldn't know how to change the values if I did

Start, -- Programmes, --Accessories, --- System Tools, -- System Restore.

Will take your PC back to a point in time before it got the virus, hopefully.

This seemed to work for several people

Here's how to fix this issue:

    1. CTRL-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager.
    2. Click File | New Task(run).
    3. Type regedit in the Run box and click OK.
    4. Browse to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options

    5. Under this key there will be subkeys named explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe. Delete the explorer and iexplorer keys entirely. They should not be listed under the Image File Execution.Options key.
    6. Close the Registry Editor.
    7. Restart the computer.

Assuming no other viruses / adware / spyware / malware are interfering, the Windows desktop should load fine now.

Source ; EXPLORER.EXE corrupted or infected
