    SSL Certificates

Hopefully this will get the attention of a certain Frisco dude.

I have a website which needs an SSL certificate, as Im new to them I dont have a clue who's good to buy one from or even if you need to buy one.

    Who/where?
    Need to pay or not?

I've always purchased SSL certs from either NetworkSolutions or Verisign...

    http://www.networksolutions.com/SSL-...eb6de349d:StiM

SSL Certificates - VeriSign SSL Certificates, SSL Encryption and Extended Validation Certificates from VeriSign, Inc.

SSL Certs are a must if you expect visitors or clients to complete sensitive information on a website... Even if no one is sniffing traffic to the website, it provides peace of mind to users when they see the lock on the toolbar and https in the URL...

You can self-generate a SSL cert and plug it into a website... The problem with this that the cert will not be backed by a cert authority... Basically an organization that certifies that the cert you are using is valid... Users will see a warning message and will have to download the client cert key from your website and "trust" the key for the messages to disappear... PITA and the main reason people just buy a cert from an authority...

Yes it supports it, the verisign one etc are a bit too pricey for a site that just starting, $400 or so. Im digging around to find the pro/cons of cheaper ones.

    melvbot,
check if your hosting provider does shared SSL certs.

doteasy would let you share an SSL cert for 30USD per year.

Just checked with then and they dont support shared SSL. I cant really justify spending $400 on one so Im going to have to go cheap and cheerful by the looks of things. It should only be for account creations as Im using Paypal for the transactions.

Ive been looking around and the prices seem to range from $12.99 with GoDaddy to a small countries national debt wih Thawte or Verisign.

As always cheap is cheap for a reason but why?

This is GoDaddys bargain bucket $12.99 link

    SSL Certificate Services

Does anyone have any experience with using these?
