That's it then Nicka, buy an ASUS motherboard with an AMD cpu.

should we simply do everything that butterfly recommends not doing?
I'm thinking of going with intel, but I'll go and check out the difference in prices. I'll replace the CPU even if it isn't burnt out as my current one is only an Athlon XP2600.
I might pop to Tawanna now and see what I can find.

Had a Ford Scorpio 20 years ago and it was a miserable car..
The latest AMD's are behind Intel on the technology front but they are very good value for money.
I would happily have an AMD again. Currenty my two notebooks are Intel.
NickA needs to look at mother board, PSU, memory, graphics card and PSU - need to make sure it has enough juice to run evrything.
Have you got a decent heatsink? I'm amazed by the size of some of the current ones, but they do their job.

All depends what you are doing.
You can overclock a Core 2 faster than a Quad core can run.
How many programs actually make use of a quad core?
Was I recommending a quad core or a duo?Originally Posted by mrsquirrel

Misread it.
I bought an asus motherboard and intel chip (sorry can't remember numbers). New board has only got a PCI graphics slot, so i had to get a new XFX graphics card too. Total was just over 6,000 baht.
Just realised that my old ram won't fit the new slots, so will have to go and but some tomorrow.
in the memory of BH, can I recommend you buying a Mac instead ?
First thing you should do is take the old pc apart, clean all the brass contacts with a rubber, then put it back together, 9 times out of 10 it will work.
New RAM is as cheap as chips.Originally Posted by NickA
I bought some the other day for my notebook. Did it fit? Did it fuck!
not that cheap.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
it's over 2000 baht for a gig isn't it?
My crt monitor stopped working last month , so thinking it was full of dust, I and friends spent hours trying to get the plasticky back cover off, only 2 screws but still couldn't budge it.
Banged it about in a temper ,reconnected it and it worked again.
So now I unplug just the monitor when its hot, just a simple overheating problem.
DD's recommendation is good.

I just bought a 1 gig laptop chip for 750 Baht. Ok, so it was the wrong one, but it's still cheap. You get 2 Gig packs now for next to nothing.Originally Posted by ChiangMai noon

Can buy name brand paired sets for that

I have been offered a kilo of gold for 100,000baht, it's fake gold but still cheapOriginally Posted by Marmite the Dog
Well, I'm back.....
If my computer had been reasonably new it might have been worth trying to fix it, but I was pretty much in need of an upgrade anyway, so it was a good excuse.
now, what do these dual core things do and how do you set them up in linux????
Linux should load the SMP module when it gets loaded. Both my Dual core installs just handled it in all hte distros I tried ( Gentoo, Mandrivia, Suse, Debian, Slackware and a couple others) You can see what the two processors are doing by running "top" when the screen loads shold be able to toggle between a averaged load and per proc load by hitting the "1" key.

I had some issues with SuSE and the new Intel power management thingy. That happened after an automatic upgrade. Eventually fixed it with a reinstall rather than messing about.Originally Posted by friscofrankie
Found that it wouldn't let the processor switch to running at low speed so it got very hot.
