    Unhappy Live from Phantip

Three days work on i-movie HD - I was making a backup this morning and during the transfer my knee moved the cable and it stopped copying saying device removal possible date loss etc etc..

The movie was made on an external HD as there was not enough space on my internal, anyway - I switch off the external HD forgetting to eject it first.

I restarted the laptop and now the movie appears to be there and is still 8 and a half GB but when I click on it to open it up I am informed that a few of the files are missing and it opens a completely empty movie, which is what you see before you have started importing footage. The other movies and other stuff on the HD is unaffected.

I came all the way here to the Apple store in Phantip where they all looked at it and after an anxious wait of an hour the guy informed me between little, inane, nervous laughs that the other movies are ok but this particular one can not open.

Useless twat should be working in a 7-Eleven.

So, you were copying the movie from where to where to back it up? It was on an external HD and you were copying to another external HD?

If you were just making a backup I can't see how the original could possibly get hosed.

Scamp. Forgive me for saying this, but you do seem to have the reverse Midas Touch. Are you sure you are not related to one G. Brown...?

Obviously it's not going to be there it didn't complete the transfer and the computer informed you that data had been lost. If you want the technical explanation an image file is created that is the size of the final file, then the computer writes the data onto that image file until complete. So when you stop half way through you are left with an image file only containing half the data and therefore unusable.

I have read some of your other threads on this forum with regards to you wanting to learn to edit. But from this post is shows you do not even have a fundamental grasp of the basics, like I recommended on one of your other posts buy a book and learn the kit. It will save you a lot of time and wasted journeys to phantip.

I was compressing it to a Quicktime movie from the ext HD to my desktop.

So now you can access neither the original nor compressed version?

^ No, though obviously there is no compressed version as it was disconnected half way through the compression.

I have run it through Disk Utility and it seems fine, but still can't be recovered.

There's an ongoing glitch with i-DVD, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and this morning before this happened it didn't. However, I saved the i-DVD project and when I opened it up earlier - I was surprised to see that when I pressed the PLAY button, I was able to view the movie but only if the ext HD was connected which means the data is there somewhere.

It means I can burn a DVD of it, and though I can edit the DVD menu page I can not edit the movie itself, nor can I compress it for YouTube.

I have a helpline number to ring tomorrow, now that I have burned a DVD of it at least all my work was not in vain, but ideally I'd like the original back.

Video editing has nothing in relation to the technical workings of computers and hard drives.

I always thought that Mac was superior than free OS.

Gent, next time, make a copy of your movie on the hard disk first, then work on it. Your original will be safe. Never trust any OS, could it be M$, Mac or Linux.

I think knocking a badly connected cable and then switching off the ext HD without ejecting results in misfortune whatever system you are using.

I was in the process of making a backup which makes it more fustrating.

Can external HD's be converted from USB to Firewire?

No more excuses for not delivering the finished project.

It all depends on the enclosure.

I still don't understand what happened. At times you say you were making a backup and at other times you say you were rendering a video. Either way, the source files should not have been affected by the disconnection glitch.

Why has the original file been effected unless you were moving it not copying it.

In all honestly Scamp you make appear to constantly make mistakes which a professional would not make.
You talk about your business and yet you can't do the simplest thing on a computer.

I think in all honesty you might need to take a step back and maybe get one of these to help you.

In all honesty, having taken it to an Apple store and been on the phone to not one but two Apple technicians who also can't figure it out, most of the replies on here show very bad form and try to mould me into some lazy, useless clown and overlook the fact that by myself I did manage to retrieve the DVD project file which is more than can be said for two Apple experts and a shop full of trained Apple staff. Granted the 'experts' were over the phone and had the disadvantage of not being in front of the machine.

This thread has managed to turn away two potential new members, so well done for that. I feel pretty fucking stupid telling them this forum is like an extended family of friends when it has been pointed out to me by many of the decent posters that most of my flack is completely undeserved and if I changed my nick or they had been started by less prolific members they would simply be answered or not.

I try and see the good in everyone and I never attack or bully anyone online and it's times like this I can see what a bunch of unpleasant cnuts a lot of you really are.

Only two helpful replies, the rest just playground shite.

This is my last post on this thread - I'll figure it out without TeakDoor and without sending the laptop away for 6-8 weeks.

How long has this place been running?

How many advertisers do you have?

    Ever wondered why?

I wish you would explain here just what file went missing and from where. I still can't tell from your posts exactly what went wrong.

iMovie does not modify source files. It creates a project file which is sort of a meta file that contains the location of the source files and all the editing and stuff you've done on your project. Once you create the final video file all iMove does is extract date from the source files and combine it into the Quicktime video.

On the one hand you said the data was lost when you were making a backup, which implies a simple file copy. On the other hand, you also said that data was lost when you were exporting a Quicktime file from iMovie. Then you also spoke of using DVD.

Not one of these three operations could result in data loss.

Something else must be going on.

Finally, why did you ask the Firewire/USB question?
