windows xp virus infestation repair question

A friend just dumped her acer laptop to see if I can fix it.
I can only get the unlicensed copy of xp to start up in safe mode with network access.
I managed to load and run the spybot software, killed 130 dirty nasty viruses.
Computer still has to load windows in safe mode to operate.
I'm I going to have to license the windows? They want nearly 6000 baht for a license.
Seems rather steep, I got a copy for $95 not long ago.

Any eyedeers? other than wiping the drive clean and load my licensed copy of windows. (that will be my last resort)

to clense a windows install I use UBCD4win

create a disc , burn it , boot it and run the anti spyware etc

to repair the windows install you might be able to do it with windows system file checker - start , run , sfc , but you will need a windows disc for that also
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

seeing as you have your disk delete the installation on the laptop put in your disk look for windows sticker on base of lap top and punch in that number run it hook up all gear to the laptop when loading internet mouse ect and when it asks for validation the net will validate it most laptops are lisc for 1000 copies of that laptop or go the other way load it and when it says go on line dont chose the telephone contact put in your country and it will give you a telephone number to ring it is voice prompt just punch in lisc number and as xp is old now it will automate it for you.if they put you to an operator tell them it is the only machine with this lisc number and you had to format it due to virus and they will give you the code to punch in
i havnt bought a lisc for years

Have you tried using restore feature and go back to a known good date.

It might be helpful if you describe what happens when you try and boot normal.

    ^ Loor ?

I bet somebody will argue that we don't know anything about the advantage of running a Windows OS.

Maybe missing the challenge trying to get rid of virus and malwares than spend the time quietly surfing the net sipping a glass single malt or enjoy a beer in a bar. How useless we are.

^oops I didn't mean for this to become a windows slag fest.
But in reality windows sucks badly.
I have a fully functioning windows partition in my macbook. The only time I go there anymore is to deal with problems like this.
The newer (leopard, panther, tiger? don't you like their cute names!)mac OS is ever so much more pleasant to use and in terms of reliability there's no comparison.
Supposedly Microsoft has a new OS on the horizon. Though I understand sales of XP have been extended through 2010 for the netbook market.

When it tries to start windows normally the computer shuts off and restarts with the page saying "sorry for the inconvenience blablabla"....and offers the safe mode start options.
The virus also seems to be affecting the Atheros wifi and cant connect to the internet.

I ran spyware software without any effect.
I was unable to get the UBCD4win to work.
My windows XP disk wasn't compatible with the Acer version of XP

I ended up downloading Ubuntu onto my macbook and creating the install disc and installing linux into the stricken machine. I figured I couldn't make it too much worse.

The Ubuntu linux installed, boots up and seems to work well and connects to the internet . The infected XP is still there too. I wanted to wipe the drive and just have the Linux but for some reason the install didn't leave me that option.
I'll try and figure it out later, at least the computer works now.
    Windows really sucks.
I'm thinking I might replace windows with ubuntu on the macbook. I kind of like how the linux works and seems worthy of further study.

Don't worry, just another uncommented feature.

you should create the ubcd4win ISO on another commputer and then burn it to disk to boot

what specs are the laptop ? there should have been an option to install with the ubuntu disk , you can also use it to repartition the HD and have a dual boot machine - then you could boot into ubuntu and install clamAV and clean the whole hard drive

Actually that's a very good idea. I do have the disc which came with the macbook

For some reason installing OS x on a pc is slightly more complicated than the linux installation, but after successfully installing linux I'm feeling braver.

I've been wanting to give it a try.

My idea of a perfect computer would be a Lenovo laptop running OSx.

it's funny how in the last 10 years Apple has repeatedly claimed millions of users have switched to the Mac and yet their market share has been the same and even declining

I am afraid there are more users giving up the Mac after they do the switch than new users doing the switch. Hardly a surprise though, it's not as easy as it is advertised, and when it bombs, it makes the windows crash blue screen a more friendly alternative.

They have around 5% of the total market and that is by some coincidence the same percent as the percent of gays in western population.
Here you can speak of a saturated market!

^ thanks for the statistics lom, makes perfect sense

they have no room for more market share !!!

but don't forget that there are plenty of closet homos in the western world, that number alone could reach 20%

Now it would be interesting to know what % of Mac users are gay.
Probably a higher rate than the general population.

A friends Lappy has the same problem with viruses, I got a copy of SP3 corporate from IP torrents, tried to load it to do a format and clean install but it comes up with the Key entry requirement. Even tho the user comments attached to this DL specifically mentioned no key required. any advice?

The bit I don't understand is that it worked 2 months ago, but requires the key now
