    How to reformat HD

I have foked up me laptop when I tried to reinstall windows XP professional (several times) after it would not except the original drivers and the keyboard would work correctly after the first fresh installation. I managed to get two operating systems in the same partition, so I then tried too install vista to wipe out the other two and deleted the partition (I think) and it has gone to total shit from there.
So I would like to now reformat my hard drive ??????
I have been trying in DOS with C\Format but doesn’t do shit

    Can anyone help ?

    Thanks

When you boot from the OS install disc, it gives you the option to reformat the HD as part of the install. Why don't you just do that?

Format cant run because it is in use by another. Format may run if volume is dismounted first. All open handle would be then be invalid. Would you like to dismount this volume (y/n)
    When I type Y enter
Cannot lock the drive the volume is still in use

if you don't want to do as MtD said for whatever reason (if you boot from the install disk it should allow you to delete the partition and then reformat it) you'll need to boot from a DOS or windows 9x boot disk or comparable OS. Best way is to boot up from the CD/DVD and when you get to the point it prompts you to choose a partition select the c drive and press "d" to delete the partition I believe. You can then create a new partition and format it.
You aren't going to be able to format the system disk while the system is running from that disk.

tried to reformat about a month ago but my xp refused, best it would do is reinstall either as an overlay or into a new directory.

btw now sort of working with only two persistent plobrems neither worth reformatting for but together frustrating enough to at least consider...utorrent still insists port not forwarded properly even though everything checked a dozen times and in order, and one frequently visited site too slow to use.

It's probably your ISP rather than your computer.

Hmm, I considered that but thought 'Enable Encryption' is supposed to thwart their interference, even though they have all user speeds in realtime. Also if you happen to be in tune with the mentality, what is their case making it wrong to use bt considering I've paid for a service they rarely provide especially by restricting my main usage?

you could also try PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall and make sure you have the correct ports etc open for utorrent, you also get info on how to set up for your router, most makes covered

also a lot of isp's are now actively blocking or slowing down torrent use, even if they dont tell you or will actually admit to it.

    You can check at

    Bad ISPs - AzureusWiki

Im throttled by bt which makes me real happy

For months I had a good speed with port forwarded fine, then for no apparent reason utorrent went into zzz mode with port not forwarded, then on and off for any number of hours to days, now off consistently for about a month despite all efforts.

But, during this month I did a full image recovery (not system restore) of C-drive which was backed up with utorrent working smoothly...it came back online with port not forwarded and stayed that way, which seems to indicate as MtD said that the throttling is from beyond my machine and not a config issue.

Didn't consider that...will be back in a week, then an hour or so to move the data after which am free to reformat as an end of year penance. Many tx and may the bird of paradise crap in your mince pies.

Yes to static IP, also, utorrent's network icon's gone green for no apparent reason even though port forward test still comes up repeatedly red...average downspeed has upped from 6-10kps before I called TT&T to complain, to 15-20kps...should be >100.

My azureus downloads went to shit for about 3 weeks a month or so ago.

now suddenly downloading very fast again, near the 260 capacity.

I have never even tried the port forwarding option.
    waaaay beyond me.

If you use a router then this will act as a firewall by default. Forwarding a port means that the router is told to pass outside connections for a specific port or ports to a specific LAN IP address on your home network. You choose the port yourself in µtorrent, usually something above 10000.

P2P works by allowing you to connect to other computers and other computers to connect to you. If you do not forward any ports, then you lose peers that are trying to connect to you, limiting the number of peers you will get. If no one in the P2P network forwarded any ports, then no one would be able to connect to anyone else.

UPnP allows for automatic opening and closing of ports by a program.

Hope that isn't gobbledygook for you CMn.

If anyone disagrees then please correct me.
