well considering you said PC which is a personal computer I guess I can join in

On average about 2-3 weeks and most of the time that finishes is because of a software upgrade.

Not uncommen to be 2 months.

3 years, still running, been running for about 14 years but no reboots in the last 3. A 386 SX/25 PC running Manchester University MCC Interim Linux with kernel version 0.12. Still in a data center in Manchester, I log in about once every 6 months to see if it's still there. Was my personal PC back when I worked there but it does bugger all now, did bugger all back then as well but it was pretty cool for the time.

Just over six months, only had to power down then as the UPS couldn't cope with a 4 hour power outage.

At the moment, everything gets unplugged at least once a day, but that is only because of lightning strikes.

I used mine every day for a couple of months with hibernate each night if that counts. Running XP mediacentre, found it really reliable until yesterday. The daughter pressed the eject button on the DVD drive then leaned on it, jammed it completely.

I took the drive out, dismantled it and got it together again, tested it opening and closing just connected to an internal power lead and it looked ok. Put the whole machine back together and nothing works

fans go round, lights on DVDs work but the monitor is blank, no beeps, no power to usb dongle. Disconnected both DVD drives but no go, tried booting from CD and nothing (ok, wouldn't expect it because no beeps or bios messages) so I'm now thinking CPU, motherboard, memory, or just possibly the video card.

I can check the memory by taking one stick out and swapping around but then I'm screwed.

Still, the hard drive is probably ok and I have my regular backup image from ... HOW LONG AGO!!! that's my photo collection gone then. (my own digital photo's, not like Gary Glitters)

I only reboot when there is a software update that requires it or when there's a power outage:

    boing:~ mnewman$ uptime
    6:24 up 13 days, 3 mins, 4 users, load averages: 2.52 2.80 2.46
That's 13 days since the last power outage....

    nick@nick-desktop:~$ uptime
    0941 up 6 days, 14:59, 1 user, load average: 0.79, 0.88, 0.83
BH, can you explain the load averages... what are they? why are mine so much lower than yours?

    From the uptime man page:

uptime gives a one line display of the following information. The current time, how long the system has been running, how many users are currently logged on, and the system load averages for the past 1, 5, and 15 minutes.
Notice that I have four users logged on while you only have one. One of the "users" on my machine is the webcam account. Also, I'm running Azures, a java app, which eats up lots of processor power:

    19814 JavaApplic 9.5% 31:32.56 90 >>> 0 0K 0K 73.3M+ 609M

The load average is the number of processes waiting for the CPU. If the number is one or less, then no processes are waiting for the CPU. If the number is more than one then the CPU is overloaded.

    There is a Windoze equivalent:

    Load Average

I'm changing my answer to every hour on the hour.

Is something nefarious going on here? Seems an odd question to a group of people who's online habits are easily tracked.

OK DD, put your hands on your monitor and spread your legs. Wider, punk!

Fairly sure, I can feel a slight vibration. The last time my HD died I actually got some text up on my display, forgot what it said now, but it was clear that the drive wasn't accessible. I'll investigate more today.

Maybe try a different avg, my windows one doesn't need rebooting on most updates, and it is updated everyday nearly.

Mine get clunky, I just rebooted this one and it is flying along again, probably don't help that all the HDDs on this one are full to the brim

Every other day, pretty much. Nice to have a clean, fresh boot when starting a day's work.

I never reboot because I am using azureus 24/7

only time I reboot is if we get a power cut.
