Help! Dagnabbit new computer sound problem

Just brought home a new PC yesterday. Some odd problem is happening with the sound.

The PC is connected to a TV by an HDMI cable. Sound works fine through the TV until I stop using the PC for a bit and come back, got a big red X at the speaker icon at the bottom. No sound. Says no speakers are plugged in.

Restarting gets the sound connected again but a bit of a pain restarting so often.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Not to help that specific problem, in my PC & TV set up I use a separate sound system, that connects to the PC, and not through the TV sound via HDMI.

Other than that, update the PC's sound driver.

Does unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in do anything, or the whole PC has to be restarted?

Luigi's first instinct is probably correct: Before you do anything else, make sure you have the latest sound driver.

This is a good place to start:

So the PC goes to sleep and when woken this problem manifests?
Lulu's idea about the driver may be the thing. The TV is probably Linux and the PC not Linux so a compatible driver is what may be the ticket.

    Check connections first, then drivers.

Back in the day I'd agree, but HDMI are usually a pretty good tight fit.
Though no harm in trying it.

Tried the sound card update earlier but it didn't help.

Will disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable next time it happens.

Don't know if the screen turns black because I usually turn off the TV long before the PC goes to sleep.

Just tried turning off the TV and turning it back on to see if it cut off the sound. Nope. No problem.

I changed to sleep times to see if it helps.

Never sleep when plugged in will solve it.

Or, close the lid and open it again. That usually will work. But Balders is right.

Oh well that's novel. Just stop it sleeping then. It's not as if you have a battery life problem.

    Case solved by Baldrick. Hoorah!

    Agreed.

Change the power settings to never sleep.

Though leaving the PC in active mode 24/7 probably isn't the best option. I put mine to sleep overnight.

Maybe set it to never sleep, and power it off at night and restart it in the morning, the PC will then be running all day.

Though getting to the actual problem, fixing that, and putting the PC into sleep mode overnight or when your out or away is probably the best option.

    It's listed as Win 7.

Most things like this are compatible.

Just don't blame me if it reformats the Chiang Mai electrical grid and takes down Air Asia FD407 from Don Muang.

Shame that our indian IT specialist couldn't help.

    Anywy- try this.

Right click on the speaker icon, select playback. On the Speakers right click Properties, and then ADVANCED, and untick ALLOW APPLICATIONS TO TAKE EXCLUSIVE CONTROL OF THIS DEVICE.

Worth chucking the dice to see if that helps.

It's Windows 10. Went to the site Lulu posted above and followed the first remedy on that page. Think that should do it. Will see soon.
