Where did all my C drive space go?

I have this HP desktop for about 4-5 years now. It's been a great tool and never gave me any problems at all.

Now it's telling me that my C drive is full and I can't even download an episode of a crappy Zombie TV .series

So here is what I've got.

120 Gig of space on the C drive.

When I look at the drive, this is what it tells me...
Doc are using up 18.5 Gig
    Pictures 15.8 Gig
    Downloads 1.47 Gig
    Prog files 4.96 Gig

My trusty calculator tells me that's 40.73 Gigs...

I've compressed everything.....flushed the cache...deleted all kinds of shit....and it still tells me I've only got 5 GB left......

Yesterday I got it up to 20.5 GB left, but today it's 5 GB and I have not done anything to fill it up....WTF?

This may be a dumb question, but where did that 79 Gigs of space go... 120 - 40.73?? Obviously I'm missing something, but I don't know what; nor do I know what to do about it.... I foking hate computers.....some of the time.

good on you for downloading TWD.. or FTWD.

Are you using win 10? did you upgrade from win 7 recently?

if yes, then that's probably the culprit.

Try running a disk-cleanup, then clean system files.. old system files cleared out over 10 gig of space on my SSD drive:c.

    Download and install this;

    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

Run it and let it clean up. You may have a ton of temporary files clogging up your drive.

At the end of the day that is a tiny drive these days. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to a larger drive they are cheap. Better yet treat yourself to a new desktop 4-5 years is long in the tooth for a PC these days.

No....still running Win 7 Ultimate.....I've got 10 on my Notebook.....and I don't like it as much as 7. This HP with Win 7 Ultimate is the best computer I've ever owned....100% bulletproof up until now. I wish MS would just stop "improving" things....cause all they do is fook up stuff that already works...

Did a full disc cleanup which did free up some space.....as I mentioned in the OP....but that seems to have just filled up again even though I have not done anything....

    Control panel
    Indexing options
    Modify
Expand D with the little arrow
Add the folders you want indexed

Already have CC and have used it.....made a bit of difference but not much.

Yes 120 Gig is not big these days.....but for my use, it's been fine. I am kicking around the idea of a new unit, but this one has been doing just great, so there's been no need....if I can get the goddam C drive freed up..... It's really frustrating not knowing what is clogging it up like this.

    Buy an external HDD.

    Put everything onto that.

Wipe your computer and transfer a few of the common files you use onto it, keeping it mainly empty.

    Sound advice, Snubby.
Just might be the case of temporary files overwhelming the smaller drives that are usually installed and available these days.

Though, ccleaner can be a useful tool, one needs to use caution with this software and set/enable appropriately for the particular issues - otherwise might remove or disable systematic items.

If one has the skill and time, files in C Drive can be edited/removed manually without the assistance of specialty software.

Try WinDirStat to find the data that is taking up space on the drive.

Use a tool to look at what's eating your space:

    Windirstat

Oh, and run Windows inbuilt Disk Cleanup (and use the Cleanup System Files option).

Yes, I recovered over 10 gig doing that.

Or reduce system recovery/turn it off (that usually consumes up to 5 gig)

The OS uses a fair bit. I just checked mine (Windows 7) - 21.5GB. At least, that's the size of the Windows folder on my C Drive.

Also, have you saved any backups onto your hard drive? They could take up a lot of space.

I have a 2TB external HD. (My Passport) and I have a full system backup on it. Looks like I'm gonna wipe the thing clean Then I'm probably gonna go out and buy a new computer and give this one to the security guard down on the corner. He looks like the kind of guy who can manage for a while with only 120 Gigs on his C drive....

What I can't explain is why the thing is full. OK...with all the cleaning and stuff I've now got a massive 9.3 Gig back, but that's all I seem to be able to get... I'll keep at it for a bit and see what else happens....

...and yes I've looked at the OS too.....with everthing added up, I should still have at least 50 Gigs left....not 9....

Thanks for all the advise everybody. It tends to get a bit overwhelming for people like me, when mostly all I do is just turn it on and off and post shit on Teakdoor.....

I take it you have already checked how big drive C is on disk management on W7.

    I forgot to say.
    right click on computer
    left click on manage
    double click disk management.
This will show how much of the disk space is allocated to C drive and you may be able to expand it.

Yes, I did that. I don't see any way to expand it though.

Good decision. You should also look into a larger form factor monitor at the same time. Give the eyes a break. I use a dual monitor setup and I find that 32" is pretty nice. I think that many people who use computers as much as you do should have a larger display as they are easier on the eyes. If you think 32" is to big a jump then go with a 27". I would not recommend smaller than that.
