What is Steam?

I wanted to download Civilization, don't mind paying if it works well, and saw that there's a version to download on Steam.

What is Steam?

Should I download it?

Is it safe?

Does it work?

Steam is a games platform, it seems to be safe enough I've had no problem and it works as well as your computers spec, I'm using a Lenovo T450 i5-5500u no dedicated graphics and it plays lots of games that it supposably shouldn't be able too, on low setting of course.

I have a week's holiday next week, loads of researching to do, so seems like an ideal time to download Civilization 5.

Steam is safe and if you pay for games then you must use them for many. Also look at GOG.com aka good old games. Lots of cool cheap shit there.
