    Anti Virus Software !

    Greetings.

I have just bought a new laptop and am now pondering what anti virus I should load. There seems to be many and varied options available, but I have no idea how to rank any of them. From your experience, what anti-virus product would you recommend and how much I am likely to pay for this protection !

    Thanks heaps

    James

    Do you mean chrome?

If you are paying then Kasparsky or Bit Defender are clearly the top of the pack. If you want free than try avast or the free version of Bit Defender.

Also make sure that you have the free version of Malwarebytes and run it weekly.

    360 Total Security.

Comes with two A/V Engines and does other useful stuff too.

Eset smart security used to be the best and lightest on memory resources.

Not sure about now though. Kasparsky (Russian company) are excellent if you are going to buy a license.

I'm just using AVG anti-virus (free edition) along with Zone alarm firewall (free).
You will still need some anti-malware programs, scan every week or 2.

Malwarebytes anti-malware is good (and free) also If you are still running Win 7
it has Windows Defender a built in anti-spyware program which is also good.

*Just make sure whatever flavor or anti-virus/malware/spyware you choose
they are only as good as the latest update/definition. So update them daily.

Careful of pop-ups! install ad-muncher, it will stop annoying pop-ups!

Format drive :c (or wherever you install your operating system) every 3-6 months
not necessary, but advisable.. it will wipe and kill everything for a clean start.

use Microsoft Essentials which is now included by default

don't make the mistakes of many amateurs of installing another AV on the top of MS Essentials (BitDefender), it will make things worse

Baidu and Qihoo are huge Internet and search providers in China, and both also offer a free antivirus product. However, Qihoo started out as an antivirus company and only later got into being an ISP. Giant ISP Baidu got into antivirus only after Qihoo started nibbling at its ISP market share. Perhaps that's why the free Qihoo 360 Total Security Essential does a better job than Baidu, and even better than some commercial antivirus products.

Actually I just installed it and it is rather good.

    WTF !?

Do that and you will have to re-install your OS (Operating System) and ALL the Programs you use.

    Truly bad advice!

Hey Patrick, how's that 'bad advice' bro? of course, you will have to re-install windows and all your programs, but that's all part of the fun no?

Then at least you know you have a clean slate. I did say it's 'not necessary'.. I do it (but I'm an anal prick) my computer is my minor wife... she's gotta be as clean
    as a whistle..

But admittedly, for the average Joe, yes, Pat is probably right... forget formatting... too much hassle..

My missus is chastising me as we speak... ouch, ouch.. ohh yeaahhhh!

The price can depend on where you buy it. For example, Kaspersky is cheaper to buy in Thailand than in the UK - about half the price if I recall correctly.

That's no conspiracy, the US has been breached by the Chinese several times in the last month, and we all know they share data with GCHQ.
