Yeah my HD is making a big noise on my i7 Vaio, high end machine apart from that. I want to get an SSD and also run an external USB HD, can I do this with this laptop?

No matter how cheap they get I ain't buying one. Who the fvck wants a SD - even if it is free.

I have a samsung 250 gig in my laptop - been well worth the 300 SGD I paid for it a year or more agoOriginally Posted by 9999
I just have and external WD 1 TB - but laptop only has USB 2

Exactly what I want and hopefully fixes the noise. What's the best way to go about it, always sketchy leaving my laptop in a repair shop after seeing a mate have components snitched and replaced with dodgy ones.Originally Posted by baldrick

Get a Mac mini with a fusion drive with a one terabyte thingamajig.
Or, better still, get the OS X configuration and you'll have oodles of wot sits with a really slinky bit of aluminium on the desk. And those Apple chaps wouldn't dream of piking you on the service.
You know it makes sense.

^and simply add the solid state kerplunk drive alongside the fluid USB mousetrap and you're on course for a raas claat.
Gotta love technology.
My hdd was making an annoying noise , now the sdd is silent.
It did take a few hours to transfer and set it up though.
No idea about the Vaio but usually you can rip the DVD drive out and add a large capacity hard drive into the space, using a cheap Optical Bay Hard Disk Caddy .
something like this .
Add a 2nd HDD using the CD/DVD Optical Drive Bay : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
Like hard disks, the cheaper ones are cheaper for a reason.
I normally buy mine from this mob.

Bought this as an upgrade for a mac mini, took out the old 5400 drive, downloaded a copy of OSX and did a clean install, bought the 128 GB version as I only needed it for OS, documents, music and photos are all on different drives. All I can say at the moment is wow!!!!, was a little bit thicker than the original spin drive so had to remove more of the mac mini than I had anticipated to get it into the same place but now it's in my boot speed has increased no end. Everything is just so snappy now, programs load super fast, safari and chrome are really quick. Did a Black Magic Speed Test before the change and after to compare, I was getting between 30 and 40 Mb/sec read and about the same write with the old drive, when I got the mac originally I thought that was quick enough but now with the SSD I'm getting 490-500 MB/sec read and 501+ write speeds. It is truly amazing the improvement it has made and silent to boot. It's a win win all round. Highly recommended without hesitation. If you want a well priced fast ssd then this is the one.
if it is not 7mm then it is not the latest gen - I had to use the spacer kit as my original lappy drive was 9mmOriginally Posted by Dillinger
if you buy one for a desktop you will need the mounting kit to afix it into the drive bay
read the reviews before you buy as some still have old controllers which are sad
but a SSD will breathe new life into your rig like RAM used to do
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

I took a look at the youtube vid for installing in my laptop, looked easy but a bit fiddly for me gonna get it done this week still not decided on what model to get, what is the ducks nuts and how much? (looking at 128 GB)

Any thoughts on this, price looks OK but its a little dated.
price is only a bit rich - Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, samsung 128gb ssd
but you may get it a bit cheaper in person
but it gets tomshardware recommendation - Best SSD Between 64 And 180 GB - Tom's Hardware

Cheers Baldrick. My man just called and said he had a Samsung for 3,700, not sure the model but I said fuck it just buy it if he thinks its OK. Will see how this performs before getting a high end one.
edit: it's this model...
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electr...SIN=B00E3W15P0
it gets a mention in the tomshardware list and it is no slouch in the speed stakes
the pro may be a little bit faster , but the bottleneck is likely to be your SATA interface anyway
SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com
I have bought in the 250 meg size both times I bought a SSD
I don't understand all this.
I've got 3 x 3 Terabyte external hard drives plugged into a DELL Latitude laptop and it seems to work fine using BitTorrent
Downloading 24/7.
Then transfer to a 1Tb portable USB HD for when I go away.
Is this sensible?
Or get one of these, then you can download HD everything.

Got my laptop today with the new SSD drive, ended up going samsung high end, 3,700 for 120G. Works sweet. Laptop is still noisy due to the fan, dude wouldnt mess with it said you need to go to sony to get the fan repaired, but it doesnt get hot now. Before it was very hot to the touch after running for a while. You can notice the speed especially with restart - insta.
I don't know why these don't come stock standard in high end machines, like my Vaoi is i7 *GB ram etc etc but heats up and sqeals like a bitch with the old tape drives.
