    Choosing the best wifi router

My apartment's (Landlord's) wife is down 50% of the time for me and others in the building. "no signal," and/or "no networks detected.

One neighbor just bought his own wifi set up as it is affordable. Works much better.

    I talked with him today.

I want to get my own personal wifi (with password), but I need to buy a router.

Need advice (yet again, thanks!) on brand and capabilities and value.

I found this site. Informative but I don't am not sure of which to choose.

Additional info on my wifi usage.

    Only 1 person - me.

    I never game.

I surf the web, and download films.

Never print (don't own a printer)

    One laptop, that is all.

    I don't know.

I will contact the wifi internet company.

Maybe they sell routers and it's included in the hookup?

I don't know what it will be connected to.

It would be my own personal wifi, like my neighbors.

Ok, so you are just going to get an ADSL connection via your phone line?

Who ever it is that you connect with will give you a wifi router.

Correct. I assume we have a landline phoneline. ?

Who ever it is that you connect with will give you a wifi router.
Thanks. I assume they charge me / sell it to me.

I assume it would be reasonable.

They normally give you some cheap Huawei shit or the like, so I would just go with the modem with one Ethernet port and buy yourself a nice Dual Band 802.11n or 802.11ac Router with USB ports for your Hard Disks and stuff.

    Thanks, Harry.

So, the cheap Huawei is not worth using, even though I just download and surf the web?

There is nothing wrong with the router they give you provided you don't want to plug in hard drives and other periphals. Even then they usually have multiple LAN ports.

If you buy your own, you will likely have to set it up yourself also.....

I have a WD portable hard drive but I only plug it in every 2 months to move files from my laptop to the Portable HD for storage. The portable is plugged in /connect for only 10 minutes at a time, sometimes less.

So, I hope I can just use the cheapy they give me.

If you buy your own, you will likely have to set it up yourself also.....
And depending on the brand and model that may require some "tech know-how" which I lack.

When the adsl router given to you fuks up, as it will, you can call them and they should come and change it... Easy. If you are lucky and the installation guy likes you (maybe get the landlord's wife to give a % of your 50% to him) then he will tell you which ones are better and he may well have one of those available in his stock...

Cisco branded routers are diabolical for signal drops.

I wouldn't touch them with a shitty stick.

if you actually intend to do something with your network rather than just connect a couple of web browsing devices to it then you may wish to look at buying other equipment and flashing it with an aftermarket firmware.

and harry has been successfully trolled by milkman with a "computer" question - again

If you have a landline, just get an ADSL account with True or whoever. For your usage, use the box they give you. Had mine for a couple of years now - no problems whatsoever, and the kid has pretty heavy gaming usage. Can easily manage the stuff we have on it (2 desktops, my laptop, plus iPad and god knows how many mobiles....).

Netgear DGND-3700 with a Netgear Range Extender.

But I'll probably upgrade to some decent 802.11ac at home soon.

A Belkin 802.11ac in the office which is not 100% reliable, I probably have to cycle it once a week, so I wouldn't recommend that.

here's something you may like Harry

How strong is your WiFi signal? You can use the NETGEAR WiFi Analytics app to get advanced analytics that help you optimize your existing or newly extended WiFi network. Check your network status, WiFi signal strength, identify crowded WiFi channels, find clear channels with less interference and much more with the WiFi Analytics app from NETGEAR.

Thanks again for the info. Not trolling at all, just ignorant. There is no chord (therefore no landline connect to my laptop.

I just plug in the power chord to the power source.

I assume there is not landline.
