What's the best free anti-virus available now?

    Be gentle.

I have used AVG, and others in the past.

I believe my anti-virus has expired, and there is an ad or "advirus" on my computer.

Yes, I need to uninstall the one I have - but I don't think I have one.

What's the best anti-virus available that is free?

    Thanks in advance.

^ thanks for the tip and info on the "browswer hijacker."

It puts up adds occasionally when I click anything, such as this forum. It also highlights certain words in green and underlines them in posts.

I'll download avast now. Hopefully it will detect and get rid of this thing.

about 50 minutes of an operation so long as you have an install disk

might be better for you to install ubuntu
    then you won't get viruses

ubuntu? I will have to learn how to install it. Will it wipe everything out on my hard drive?

That's funny! Not a chance big guy. Stay off porn sites if you can. Remember, that's why you got kicked off your neighbor's piggy back connection a couple of months ago.

Good news for you barbaro is that a browser hijacker is not usually considered a full blown virus, more of a fungal infection, which is easier to treat, less embarrassing and could be cleared up in a few days!

    OK, I tried that.

First I left a website and typed in "google.com" into my browswer. On the lower left corner of the screen on / near the bottom bar said something like "waiting for bs.server-something."

Once at google I typed in the name of the city. In the brower on that city came up at the end of the address in the address space. I tried to cities and both only had the city.

I have also installed "malwarebytes" and it's running now. I am currently funning a "quckscan." It has found 27 files (or claims to so far).

Cheers, for the help. I will keep trying.

You may have the BetterSurf infection. Here's a link to check and remove.

Hi Barbaro, if you have a laptop, it should have a recovery mode.
Google your model of laptop, recovery mode, one of the "F" keys on top of your key board.
Most laptops don't ship with discs these days.
Another option is , do a system restore, in your start menu type in system restore,
if there are any files corrupt, it will come up on restore, you wont be able to delete them from memory, but it will show you whats up.
Avast is good, about $40 a year, if you pay you get a lot more tools and features.

    Cheers
    Biff

The word highlighter is probably an uninvited Add on or extension.
You didn't say what browsers you are using , eg on Chrome you-
click the 3 bars (top right )
    click settings
    click extensions (near top left)
and disable or trash can any you don't recognize.
then close and restart the browser.

If it's a browser hijacker , you might need something like adwcleaner which is a
french company so select English in top right if needed.

General Changelog Team - How to use AdwCleaner version 3.x
