Upgraded to 1GB RAM

I upgraded my old 10yr old COMPAQ to 1GB RAM

some silly business software from IBM wants a min of 512MB for doing nothing more than being idle in the background, complete waste of resources

I have installed it for 2 hours and my Laptop keeps crashing,

I am thinking of downgrading back to 256MB RAM, what a waste of time !!!

Maybe harry could advise me here

Papillion is rather famous on TD for confusing a wifi switch with internal registry settings... He is the dullest tool in the box.

Butterfly, it should handle 1gb ram, turn it off, remove ram, reseat ram back into slots.Reboot.
Start menu, go into MY computer halfway up on right side, System Properties, top left.
In window pane it will say Installed Memory..1gb of ram or if unlucky 250mb.

Butter are you a pauper? Why are you trying to milk some extra life out of antiquated piece of crap?
Do us all a favor and pop on down to Somchai PC's and buy something up to date, preferably using wiin7. Sadly XP is obsolete.

I haven't tried win8 yet but I suppose they've fixed it by now.
Win7 isn't that much different from XP really.

I admit I ain't no techno wonder boy..but I get by with what's availble for cheap now. Since I dislike spending money now that I no longer make $90.00 an hour flying airplanes. I like to get more for my money that what the mac offers.
When I can buy a lenovo netbook with a legal win7 for 8k I go for it. It ain't perfect but it's fully functional in the modern world. And for the smartphone crap I find a 9k tablet to work equally well as a 24k top line android or Iphone.
What could you possibly think you will do with a 10 year old laptop other than write an eloquent novel on ladyboy culture or just listen to music. All my old macs have been retired to playing music, as their hardware still remains functional and seemigly superior to the other crap out there. I'm still using a 4g ipod mini in my shop which has been in nearly constant use for over 6 years. Whatever you say about macs they are reliable has hell.
I still keep my old crappy cracked up macbook because it has XP on it and also like XP, but frankly Win7 is now better and I never use the macbook anymore. It still boot OXS or XP but I don't really need it anymore. It's just another reserve 500g hardrive now.

I have several laptops for different purposes, nothing wrong with the old laptop for running market data and entering trades and a running few automated scripts

you can buy a recent laptop for 10,000 THB and buy a legal WinXP copy for 50 USD, what else do you need ? laptops and PCs are extremly powerful these days, even for low specs, they fulfill the needs of 99.99% of users. Only fragile egos tards and gamers need powerful machine, as some kind of fashion tricks.

^nothing wrong with making old hardware work for you, but you try to exceed the limits then move on.
I venture to guess you're having ddr2 vs ddr3 ram issues on the old computer.

I gave up on macs some time ago when I got a lenono ideapad for less than 10k, loaded with a legal copy of win7. Gay or not win7 performs adequately. if I had the inclination I'd try a hackintosh and load an appropriate OSX version on the Lenovo. Many have done so, but reality dictates that for a properly working puter I stick with win7. I'm not that crazy about it but the compatibility with the android devices is part of the equation. And like I already said I ain't no genius here, I just consider myself lucky to manage all these programs and devices as they are.

I kinda wish Samsung Kies wasn't such a PITA to use. I know there are alternatives but I haven't figured it out yet. By the time I felt ready to root my SGS1 the links to the downloads no longer worked, and then the last update actually made the device sing, so I didn't feel the need to install different hacked operating systems.
But technology is roaring ahead and what was current 3 years ago is now obsolete in this android stuff.

Anyway check the ddr2 vs ddr3 ram I bet that's the problem.
