What I'm on about is this.

Why the fvck do we have to (in this modern day of fanjangled hitech gadgets) - still have to reach for the remote every time the channel changes/ad's come on to turn the volume up or down due to wide variations in volume?

Radio has used compression since day one - why don't modern tellys contain an audio compressor?

    Comprende?

EDIT: or my telly's just too cheap?

advertising laws - I believe the seppos or the poms have just passed regulations on advertising volumes - nothing to do with audio compression

simple fix - don't watch television - torrent it

^ Pretty sure they have tested the "loud add" thing and proven that they are not actually louder per se in decibels, but use a much denser compression which makes them seem louder.
    In Oz anyway.

A compressor is added as a final sound manipulator just before the signal is relayed out to the amplifier.

So it shouldn't matter what the satanic advertising agencies try to push - it will go through the compression software just the same.

Maybe though - it's because the TV manufacturers have a little agreement with the advertising agencies.

Would cost about $1 to add.

Compression boosts the low bits of signal and compresses the louder parts.

It gives you a sound wave with a very small difference between peak and trough - so the volume range remains constant.

    DAC - Digital Audio Compression?

Digital to Analogue converter as opposed to the input side ADC - digital processing in the middle

    ^Ok - got it.

It's a bit like now they tell you your phone has 16m mega pixels, but your 10 year old cybershot takes sharper pictures with 2m mega pixels.

They try to baffle (successfully) with bullshit.

Compression is old (and now) simple technology.

Here's a regular uncompressed signal (below) Vs a heavily compressed signal (top)
