XP vs Win8

Anyone using Windows 8? What do you think of it against XP?

Am thinking to downgrade my XP to Win8 next year, when the goons at MS stop supporting the best platform that I have used.

The interface has some annoying usability aspects and the fact that "Shutdown" doesn't actually shut down the OS which requires a weekly reboot to clear the cache is just stoopid.
Other than that, we are pretty much at the point where you don't really interact with the OS.

get a 8 or 16 gig usb drive
go to pendrivelinux.com
follow the instructions and install a few different flavours on your drive and have them bootable
boot from USB and choose a flavour and try it out - testing your hardware - sound , HDMI , network , wifi

then once you have you favoured distro - fully install it and then install win xp / win 7 / win 8 in a Virtual Machine on top of yout linux

log on to forums and proclaim yourself a guru becuase you use linux

To the OP, Windows 8 (.1) is the fastest and most secure desktop Windows out there, but on a desktop PC, you need to install one of the many free tools to restore the old start button and start menu, then you have the best of both worlds (assuming you really do want to use the Windows 8 GUI).

And Windows 7 and 8 need more oomph than XP, so make sure at least that you have 4Gb of RAM.

Let me tell you WTF I am on about.

Not sure if it is Win8 or Samsung, but selecting Settings/Power/Shutdown does not actually shut down the system, it puts it in an advanced sleep mode and allows for a quick restart. A part of this is not clearing the memory cache. After about 7 days I start getting memory warnings and have to do a reboot to clear the cache.
It's a thing, google it.

You don't need the WinXP Update anyhow, they usually fuckup your PC more than they fix it.

I am expecting to run WinXP for another 10 years, so will a lot of people.

My poor old computer was running slow all the time, and after 3 years of using Windows XP relentlessly, I finally decided to make the transition to Windows 7 on my aging desktop. Things got even worse for me, because even though Microsoft went the extra mile to make sure Windows 7 was as light as possible, it was still more resource intensive than XP. I spent a lot of time trying to configure my Windows 7 installation to run less processes but I just kept running into dead ends. After that I decided to install Xubuntu, and had a great run with it. Of course after a while I became nostalgic about all the fun games I used to play, and knew it was time to go back to Windows, but how could I?

With old hardware and modern needs, I knew I was in a pickle. After expressing my needs to some fellow classmates, a now very good friend suggested that I check out Tiny 7. He said it worked great on old hardware, and I would hardly be able to tell the differences from a typical Windows 7 installation, besides the SPEED of course! I installed Tiny 7 on it's own partition to give it a whirl, and to be completely honest, I haven't booted up from my Xubuntu partition since.

Tiny 7 was developed in an effort to reduce Windows 7 Ultimate down to it's vital running components and nothing more. Some might even say that person(s) behind Tiny 7 really aren't working on a usable operating system at all, and that they are only trying to see how far they can push it before it breaks. Regardless of the rumors, I can only say what I've experienced personally, and I love Tiny 7.

What I know for sure, is that Tiny 7 is a super light-weight bootlegged version of Windows 7. Once the OS is installed, it automatically activates itself upon first-boot. Once it finishes running the series of activation commands in a CMD window, it will restart once more. At this point, it's ready to roll.

Pros
Very fast, even on old hardware
Pretty much identical to Windows 7 Ultimate

Cons
Does not come with the latest .NET framework
Google Chrome can only be installed via the offline installer.

Once you've downloaded your copy of Tiny 7, you can then burn the .iso image to a DVD and install it on your PC. I highly recommend this operating system to anyone who wants to upgrade an old computer and maintain a reasonable level of performance.

I must admit I'd never consider Samsung to be an established PC manufacturer, and now you know why. They should stick to phones, tablets, ACs, fridges and washing machines.

This sounds like the Fast-Start function that can be switched ON/OFF in the BIOS.

Thanks,I'll have a look at that. It's nice to boot quick, but you effectively have your ram.

If you'd googled it properly you'd find several people have solutions for it.

Another one is to update the BIOS and Chipset.

Is there a Samsung Update facility on there or have you put on a stock Windows 8?

If the latter, go to Samsung's support site and look for downloads there.

Do a Windows Update, and download SlimDrivers and install everything that finds, too.
