iPad mini is better than 7" Android...

Being bored and being the time of the month that I send all me money to the missus... I thought I'd buy meself something.

Firstly, I saw an HP tablet for 100 pounds - not bad, has an SD card, the rest is average, but for leaving on the coffee table, taking out sometimes if I want a coffee and look at the internet thought it'd be ok. The quality felt ok.

Then, just next to it was an ASUS padphone which also has 3g, 32gb, and a much nicer screen, so I though - hello...

Then, next to that was an iPhone mini for the same price as the ASUS. I played around with it, and it felt nice. Good quality, as are the other 2.

So, I got me phone out and started to compare screen sizes, weight, etc. & what did I notice... well, the 7" Android tablets had big bezels and the screens did not appear to be much bigger than the 5" on me phone; screens probably not as good either, certainly not on the HP. The iApple, on the other hand, felt substantially bigger, just the right size in fact. So, I thought, should I? Could I? So, I started looking at the specs - for the price of the 32gb ASUS with SD card slot, I could get a 16gb iApple with no expansion capability. On me phone, I currently have the 16gb and a 32gb micro SD card, that feels enough although I might put a 64 gb micro SD card in soon. So, the iApple with 32gb and 4g (might want to use it out and about, airport, etc) was farking expensive - about 400 pounds, and even then I wouldn't feel happy with the storage, or the iApple iTunes (music being a main reason for the device), so - no, couldn't do it.

I didn't buy anything because: 1) nothing felt quite right, I liked the 8" size (looked at an 8" Samsung which had a micro sd card slot, but I hate Samsung they just feel so cheap and plasticy, plus it was over 300 pounds...); 2) I know some new tablets, some at 8", are coming out soon; 3) thought I'd get a better deal, certainly a better selection, in Muscat.

I can certainly understand how folks would be happy with their Samsung 8"; nice tablet with good functionality, bit pricey for the cheap feel though...

7" tablets just seem that little bit too small.

    Any thoughts?

p.s. yes, I did consider the Xperia Z tablet, but I don't want a 10" tablet, especially not at that price... (even though it's waterproof)

Due out anytime now, this win 8.1 8" tablet with sd card (but no 3g/4g) is 200 pounds from Dell. I like Dell stuff, so it'll be worth a look.

Why does everything have to be waterproof for you?

Are you an incredibly messy eater/drinker, or just seriously into 'watersports'?

^I often post on TD while in the shower.

This little ASUS baby should also be out anytime; it's only a 7"er, but it's cheap, quad core, sd slot (no 3g/4g). Only 100 pounds, so very cheap.

A fair bit better than the HP I looked at for just about the same money - wonder if it's available in Muscat? For 100 pounds, you can't really go wrong...

This Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a nice machine, at a good size, with sd card. But the price is high, and I just don't buy Korean products. Plastic.

Slightly more expensive than the equivalent iPad!

Supposed to have a really nice display.

^yeah, it's certainly a very nice device, Nige - the screen is supposed to be great, better than the iPad mini. But for me, I've got a good camera on my phone, have the laptop for workish stuff; it'd be nice though to sit on the sofa or a coffee shop or airport, etc, with a nice little device like these. I don't wanna spend that kind of money...

I have an iPad mini... Very convenient as I can stuff it into most pockets while on the town. Mostly is for my daughter but it gets plenty of use by me as well

Fok an SD slot... If I need more room I just remove old shite via the MacBook and add new shite, Simple.

Dell anything is complete shit... Everyone knows that aside from Betty apraently.

Nice to have plenty of space on your device without having to piss around... Most folks want an SD slot. The iApple mini is nice, screen, size, slick, but iTunes is a problem, and music/vids is one of my main uses.

Not true. I had 2 Dell laptops over the last 5 or 6 years, both were better than the Fujitsu I just got rid of and the current HP I have (both Fujitsu and HP are decent brands). Basically, nowadays, I spend 15,000 baht ish on a laptop and expect it to last for 2 years - I'd like a big external drive that I could rust to last 5-10 years...

The iPad mini is just so expensive compared to comparable competition; just like the iPhone 5s... I saw the 5c today, fukin crap piece of plastic, and more expensive than the i5, HTC One and S4... crazy...

What shit have I bought that I don't need?

My phone is great, and TD members have benefited from some picture threads, I chat to the missus on Line/Skype everyday, listen to music, check me bank, emails, etc. Bloody excellent buy - enjoying the new shark game too, eating folks is most enjoyable...

The laptop is a laptop, it was cheap, does work stuff, and I watch sport via the internet on it...

I don't really need a tablet 'tis true, but the ASUS is 185 quid (32gb with sd card and 3g), plus I'm gonna check the new ASUS which is only 120 squids... I spend more than that during a night out in Bkk...

You could do everything you do now with a cheap Nokia and your laptop, Betty. You seem to have this need for all your virtual world to be on tap 24/7, hence your lust for 4G and underwater gadgets.

are you banned from any pub quiz nights yet ?

Also the Note swung it for me with its great little stylus , it will keep me amused for hours on the plane with the painting apps I have on board .

TBH if it wernt for that I might have gone iPad mini + you can get offboard storage for them but its a faff around having bits hanging off it , the Note is neat and tidy is lighning quick , dont forget you get a quad core processor + 2 gig of ram up front ,,, have you actually held one ? it dont seem cheap + plasticky to me ,, really pleased with it and love all the free apps to download free music etc .

Juat as an aside , might help someone , I have installed a fantastic Thai lingo app ,, can higly reccomend that one to ! ( Thats what its called Thai Lingo )

Wanted the Pipo m7 8.9 inch - lovely-but cannot buy it easily here in uk ... so I decided to get that Asus memo hd 7 , but they never have them in stock..

so got an Acer Iconia A1 , not sure about it yet , has nice big 7.9 screen , 4-3 ratio. think its a cheap version of ipod mini- £160

Why do tablet makers always put the speaker on the back ?
And why don't they use matte screens instead of glossy ?

Should I just get an iPad mini: I've never had an Apple device before , so at least I'd know what I'm complaining about... It's not that more expensive than the other 4g options (which are few...)
