    2013 XP's penultimate year

Microsoft to end support for Windows XP in one year
    Stephanie Mlot
    09 April, 2013

Microsoft wants its Windows XP users to get with the program, and is giving them 365 days to do so.

One year from today, Microsoft will shut down extended support for its 12-year-old operating system, in favour of newer platforms like Windows 7 and 8.

In 2002, Microsoft launched its Support Lifecycle policy, allowing 10 years of combined mainstream and extended support for Microsoft Business and Developer products, including Windows OSes. To that end, Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will lose that support on 8 April 2014.

"If your organization has not started the migration to a modern desktop, you are late," Stephen Rose, senior product manager for Windows Commercial, wrote in a blog post. He revealed that it takes an average company 18 to 32 months to reach full deployment, and urged businesses to begin planning and application testing "immediately," to avoid issues later.

But don't think that a simple upgrade from XP to Windows 7 or 8 — a "modern operating system," according to Rose — will do the trick.

"You will need to do a clean install," Rose said, meaning user data must be migrated and applications reinstalled on the new OS. More details on testing hardware and apps can be found on the Windows blog.

Microsoft already pulled mainstream support for Windows XP in April 2009, but come this time next year, it will drop extended support, meaning no more security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates.

Rose warned that running XP SP3 and Office 2003 after support ends can expose companies to potential security risks. Even anti-virus software support won't be enough, and vulnerabilities discovered in the operating system or applications running on it will remain unpatched and open to malware.

"Using XP after April 2014 is an 'at your own risk' situation for any customers choosing not to migrate," Rose wrote.

Windows XP launched in 2001, and has been named Microsoft's most popular OS of its time. Redmond has given users plenty of time to make the move; the software giant announced the news last April, two years before the shutdown, before the Windows 8 launch.

According to March data from Net Applications, approximately 38.73 per cent of PC users are still using Windows XP; the most popular OS is Windows 7 with 44.73 per cent. About 4.99 per cent are on Vista, while only 3.17 per cent have upgraded to Microsoft's latest, Windows 8.

Microsoft has not pegged XP's current corporate share, but the Redmond, Wash., software developer clearly knows it's large: In January, during the company's last quarterly earnings call, CFO Peter Klein said 60% of all enterprise PCs were running Windows 7.

Since few businesses adopted Windows Vista -- and with Vista's usage share now under 5%, some that did likely ditched it -- the remaining 40% must, by default, largely be Windows XP.

Windows XP will not suddenly stop working 53 weeks from now; it will boot, run applications and connect to the Internet as it did before. But it will not be served with security updates. Minus patches, and knowing how frequently cyber criminals uncover vulnerabilities, security experts expect hackers to exploit XP bugs that users will have no way of quashing.

Those same experts have split on whether Microsoft will extend Windows XP's support to protect what increasingly looks to be a major chunk of Windows users. But Microsoft has not signaled any desire to do so.

I have no issues with Windows 7 and am interested to see windows 8 receiving support here. I might experiment with is on one of the staff computers.... anything is an improvement on Vista.

Do it on the computer of somebody you don't need since they'll probably quit shortly after they next boot the machine up.

I have had every Windows since the DOS days and have found 7 to be their best to date. I am going to treat myself to a new laptop next month so will give 8 a spin and see how it is. Hated XP out of all of them the most.
I stopped and gave a young lad who was hitchhiking a lift the other month. I haven't seen anyone hitchhiking ever in Thailand and it is years since I saw someone back home doing it. I did loads of it when young. Anyway he had a battered old Toshiba which was running 95. He said it did everything he needed it to do so stuck with it.
As the old saying goes " If it aint broke don't fix it "
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

Windows 8 is fast, has decent driver support and works fine as long as you install Classic Start Menu or the like to get rid of that godawful Metro shyte.

But 8.1 will be out in a few months, so I think Micro$oft are actually feeling the heat from their shareholders.

Either way, XP is a dead dog and those that wish to cling onto it will probably end up installing a Linux build.

It's called cutting off their nose to spite their face.

I have XP. So far it ain't broke. Circumstances prevent me from downloading upgrades from MS so when they stop supporting no effect here.

They aren't usually upgrades, they're normally security fixes, but as long as you're aware of that and take the necessary precautions, no harm, no foul.

I am not averse to a knocked off copy of Photoshop or other software that they want to charge you an arm and a leg for but when it comes down to the software that actually makes my computer do what I ask of it I tend to stick with original software only. I have found that it is well worth paying that few thousand Baht to Microsoft and the availing myself of their support. I once had an engineer call me from Singapore and stay on the line over 5 hours to sort out the problem I had when upgarding XP to Vista.
I have also found that if you keep your automatic updates on then you suffer few if any issues with viruses or malware.
Each to their own though !
I will give 8 a spin when I get my next laptop and see what it is like !

By that time it will be 8.1 and you'll wonder what all the fuss is about.

We have 1 machine running XP and that is only for an accounting program that won't run on anything else. It is not connected to any networks and the USB ports and CD drive have been physically disconnected.

Everything else is either OS X or Slackware. After the joke that was Vista and the horrible ribbon thing in office we said fuck microsoft and we haven't looked back since.

The Ribbon thing was a vast improvement on previous releases. You can basically get rid of all the stuff you don't use, it's very customisable.

Vista was more than a joke though, cruel and unusual punishment if you ask me.

perfect for your usual PC tard though, they deserve it for being so stupid in their majority and upgrading without thinking or without justification,

no wonder MS treat them like the ATM cash cows that they are,

it's best not to update your WinXP with all those hotfixes and shit, it will usually fuck up your OS when you least expect it

SP3 ok, but no hotfixes unless required by a specific application

only fools run Windows Update on Automatic mode, and are only advertising their cluelessness and insecurity
