    24" or 27"

Looking at monitor upgrade. The 24inch HDs are about $180 and the 27 inch HDs are about $280

Is the extra 3 inches worth $100?

Which models/brands have a dedicated brightness control with real buttons you can find in the dark? The reviews never seem to mention controls and only talk about colour/brightness/response time.

The number 1 thing that foks me off with my monitor is digging around in 3 sub menus twice a day to turn the brightness up in the daytime and down at night time.

I am not a gamer and am not really worried about the technical performance.

Get two Samsung 24" monitors and a stand. You'll not regret it.

24" if you're going to use it as an everyday monitor.

I use our 32" for games sometimes and while it's great for that it's a headfuck as a monitor. Far too big.

I have to say, I dont ever recall looking for the controls on any monitor Ive owned. They come on when the PC starts
You will need 2 monitors though.
One for skype, the other with You Porn and webcam, dependant on who is calling obviously

Install F.lux instead, you won't need to bother with brightness controls. Once you've installed your location in the set up it knows when sunrise and sunset are and adjusts your screen accordingly.

Took the words right out of my mouth. There's an Android equivalent, too.

I love my 32" monitor, my old 24" is used beside it for watching movies/tv shows.

^is it super hi-def 2560*1680 or just HD?

Can't see the need to go bigger than 27" for HD for a work monitor that is only 60cm away. Maybe for gaming or whatever.

It's actually Samsung HDTV but for what I do (No gaming) it works a treat, From my seating position to the monitor it is just over 1000mm.

    Fair enough.

I cannot have the monitor more than 60cm away or I need to wear glasses so I think 27" is as big as I could go.

while browsing for a 32" tv for the bedroom the other week, the salesman in the shop told me you cant see the difference in screen quality between a HD ready and a full HD screen on that screen size. So I reckon it would be pointless on a 24 or 27" monitor.

^That is true for TVs, which are about 3 metres away (you cannot see the pixels due to the distance), but for monitors, which are about 60cm away, the difference is pretty clear.

The difference between my current 22" 1680x1050 monitor and a 24" HD is chalk and cheese (I tried a HD recently). The higher resolution lets you get more windows on the screen so it is a practical benefit, not just a qualitative one like with TVs.

The HD monitors are at a good price point so it is choice between what is best a 24" or a 27". The super hi-def 2560x1680 monitors are a bit pricey (about $700).

how many pixels does their 42 inch screen have ?
Looking at the 1080 youve mentioned, I doubt it will play on a TV

10 bit encode. You need up to date decoders, like LAV, VLC 2.0 , some builds of mplayer, etc. No external players.

I think the problem I have with it is that it's only used occasionally so i hook the laptop up to it and then have to fuck around getting it all set up.

If I was using it all the time and had the room set up properly then it might not be an issue. It just seems too big to me though. Certainly too be for my office space.

I need the real estate, have about 5 dashboards I need on screen at any given time.

^What I am saying is that for HD (1980x1050) you don't need bigger than 27" monitor because a monitor is not likely to be more than half a metre away.

What is the point of going to 32", you don't get more real-estate (pixels) you just have to start moving your head to see from one side of the screen to the other.

Fair enough going to 32" if you are also going up to 2560X1680. Then you are getting more real-estate.
