One of my hard drives has definite issues.

My g drive which is a 40 gig hard drive just about completely full of music is about to go tits up.
I'm fairly sure of this, About 100 files 9 or so gigs) have just disappeared.

I noticed this after the drive dissapeared about a week ago. I pulled the leads out and reconnected it and it reappeared minus those files.
The hard drive is one that was recessitated in the past.
Should I just unplug it from the system, can problems with this hard drive cause problems with my others?

Copy the stuff off it whilst you can ... these things, like our livers, don't last forever.

Well since a 250 gig HD is cheaper than a good soapy massage I would.

No. After making sure everything has been correctly copied to somewhere else, you could try re-formatting. I use a utility called "Beyond Compare" to do a binary comparison of files, folders and drives before deleting copied stuff.

The DOS command "fc" can do a binary compare (/b switch):

    FC [/A] [/C] [/L] [/LBn] [/N] [/OFF[LINE]] [/T] [/U] [/W] [/nnnn]
    [drive1:][path1]filename1 [drive2:][path2]filename2
    FC /B [drive1:][path1]filename1 [drive2:][path2]filename2

/A Displays only first and last lines for each set of differences.
    /B Performs a binary comparison.
/C Disregards the case of letters.
/L Compares files as ASCII text.
/LBn Sets the maximum consecutive mismatches to the specified
    number of lines.
/N Displays the line numbers on an ASCII comparison.
/OFF[LINE] Do not skip files with offline attribute set.
/T Does not expand tabs to spaces.
/U Compare files as UNICODE text files.
/W Compresses white space (tabs and spaces) for comparison.
/nnnn Specifies the number of consecutive lines that must match
    after a mismatch.
    [drive1:][path1]filename1
Specifies the first file or set of files to compare.
    [drive2:][path2]filename2
Specifies the second file or set of files to compare.

    You rang?

Copy what you can off of it and disconnect it. A failing hard drive should not affect others.

The aforementioned utility is probably way beyond CMN's comprehension. I would simply use Windows to copy what is available, then, perhaps try a file recovery utility.

But definately the first step here is to backup what one can before attempting anything else.

I think I'll buy an external hard drive tomorrow and dump all my music and movies and stuff on it.

The hard drive will have two cables: one is for power (white end, has red, black, and yellow wires going into it) and the other is the data cable which may either be a single thick red cable or a wider thinner gray cable (or, if your computer builder was really fancy it might be a thick roundish cable surrounded with colored vinyl....in either case the end will be rather wide where it connects to the hard drive). Shut down your PC and disconnect the power cable. That's all you should need to do to disable it.

Get a new fuckin power supply, before (or the same time) you buy a new HD. we identified some slight problems with your PS and you are having continued HD problems.

    same hard drive.
I think the amount of power cuts we get is doing for them.
Probably need one of those surge protectors.

You still have an issue with your power supply. this could leave to further problems down the road. power supplies are cheap in comparison to your time, lost data etc.

OMG! You still haven't got one? With all the thunderstorms in Phuket now, my HDs, ADSL modem and Ethernet switch would've been fried by now.

And some bugger at the power company keeps turning the power off for 5 seconds around 2 AM practically every day. I don't know if it's to remind all the bar owners that they should've closed or it's to do a clean reset on everybody's electronics that's been screwed by all the preceding glitches and brown-outs.

^Only a half terabyte amazing how far(?) we've come...
You can only get about 700 DIVx full-length movies n that. Two of those oughta be enough to hold a few months of work eh?
