    Yahoo news ads

How do I stop the ads on Yahoo News from playing or stop the sound so that I can still hear the videos of the article I'm looking at?

Yet, than he'll be inundated with Google/Microsoft [Bing, MSN, etc]ads...
That's the only reason that they exist - to promote adverts and themselves.

Set your homepage display to something banal and less interactive.

I believe there is a way to disengage/disable/block pop-ups, ads, spam, etc within your systems.

Adblock Plus - Surf the web without annoying ads!

When you have it installed the ad should should have a small tab on it you can click to block it.
Also clicking the ABP sign in your browser will give you options to block full pages, sources etc.
Should do anyway, a lot of sites are quite sophisticated and will block adblock.

It's worth adding Do Not Track to any system to block advertising companies tracking you across the net, not only is it an invasion of privacy but they are also hogging resources on your computer.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"
