    3G phone as modem

Before I rush out and buy a 3G air card modem..Is anyone using a 3G phone as a modem via USB to a computer …..if so which model and interface software?

I currently use a Nokia X2 which is 2G ..have not been able to source any way of upgrading firmware or whatever to 3G.

    Thanks

It seems to be pretty standard in most smart phones these days. I've used it for several years. Nowadays I used a Android Samsung but have used other mobile phones. I've never needed extra software. It's standard with the phones. I have also used an old 2G mobile phone to connect to my computer using a cable to use the Internet. It was a while ago and I don't recall all the details but I may have needed to use Nokia's own software for that.

Your phone seems to be only 2 years old and according to this website (if it's the same phone), has Wifi Hotspot, which I assume means you can tether your phone to your computer to connect your computer to the internet.

    .
Wifi hot spot and tethering are different.

Tethering directly connects the phone and computer, and allows the computer to access the data transmission of the phone.

Wifi hotspot does not need direct connection, and will allow computers with wifi facility to use the phone data transmission. One phone could be connected by several devices.

    If i am not mistaken..

Yes, but the Wifi hotspot has a built in password so you'd need to know that to connect to it. Only the phone owner should know the password.

And if the phone has a built in Wifi Hotspot facility, it should also allow cable connection (tethering).

    Something like this:

If you have Nokia PC Suite on your computer, it should be a doddle to connect to the Internet. All you will need is a cable from your phone to your computer.

    Just follow the instructions.

Nokia has a software updater programme available - if it works with your phone. You can find it via your PC Suite.

By the way, does a 3G SIM card work in your 2G phone?

On mine it's tethering and mobile hotspot.

Just had an SMS from Bangkok bank. Free 300mb speed internet for 5 days, just dial the given number.

    Works great.
