Totally Free - Have I got it wrong?

My girlfriends sister has finally managed to land a farang , the sister brought this farang , a German guy to see us and while the girls were knocking some food up, I made polite conversation ( avoiding my pet subject on house cleaning routines and hygiene tips ) .

In this conversation the German guy said that he was using Skype on his Android mobile phone and boasted that he paid '' Nothing '' for the telephone calls he made when using Skype.

I'm no expert when it comes to mobile phones , but surely his '' free '' statement can't be correct , if he's using Skype on his Android mobile phone and is connected to a 3G provider , then when he makes a Skype call some of his MB package / Hours- minuets will be used and he's actually paying for any Skype calls in that way , if he's using GSM then again he would be charged for the connection time while making a Skype phone call .

Can the Germans statement be correct , have I got it wrong , are phone calls using Skype on an Android mobile phone in some way totally free ?
If you whistle at night snakes will come to your house.

Could be if he uses Wi-Fi. I answer calls on Skype and I don't have a paying membership.

Skype to Skype is free. Skype to other not free.

    ^Not exactly true.

The official Skype for Android app only allows user to use Skype over Wi-Fi (wireless connection) within the US

the voice and video is data

he is paying for the data one way or the other - unless of course he is leaching off your wifi

Well in a sense no he would not use up credit on his phone for each call but the data used would have to be paid for, I am on AIS on the 20 hrs for 100b deal, when I hit 20hrs of use it steals another 100b from my credit, I mostly only call using a skye app as well (Nokia).

So if this German guy is making normal phone calls as well , then topping up his sim card credit , he won'y realise that in fact some of the used credit went onto him using his Skype calls , have I got that right
