Uninstall Messenger on your computer. I presume that like Yahoo Messenger, your contacts are all in cyberspace (I've only briefly used Messenger and can't remember).
Then download an older version of Skype from somewhere like Filehippo.

silly question but where is messenger installed in W7? I cant see it on the uninstall feature or separately listed on the all programs menu. is it not totally integrated with W7 and uninstallable?

just to add a couple of twists - my skype id and messenger id are different. when i downloaded skype my user name of choice xxxxxxx ie the first part of my email ( [email protected] ) had already been taken

also last year i upgraded my hotmail to the outlook version.

neither of those should have made a difference should they?
You dont pay them to stay for the night, you pay them to leave in the morning

Messenger may well be integrated with W7, for all I know.
Just go here Download Skype 6.1.0.129 - FileHippo.com and try downloading a much older version of Skype, then upgrade. Just below the "download" section at top right of page, you'll see a little section saying "old versions". Click on "view more"........
