Wherever I was was no more than a 15 or 20 minute slow walk from the Base. I think I turned right out of the gate and walked towards the little guest house, passing a shopping mall on my right. The little bar streets were on the left side of the main drag. 1991 mind you. There were a bunch of little shops among the bars selling GI crap.

I'm going to check it out but I have an idea of the area where you stumbled into. Was it a short street with one side having a very high wall on part of it? If it is then it's a perfect street to try keep people out of not wanted there and it has, or more like had, several places that could have served as bars and a massage parlor or two and maybe even a "Love Hotel". I've cut through there a few times over the years and there are old signs that show it used to be a bar area.

^Sounds about right. It was a narrow street, not very long, alleys cutting off of it, and I seem to recall the bars all being on one side. Only a handful of bars - less than ten. All little joints. The NO Whites sign was also in several bar windows. I had heard of areas like that in some places in Vietnam, but I spent all my time in the bush so have no direct knowledge.

Statewide hire government and contractor jobs are the best deal. But even the government local hire jobs as well as jobs with the Navy Exchange or Morale, Welfare and Recreation department aren't that bad to some people. Only people working on base now who can stay forever are teachers, contractors, MWR and NEX employees.

The government several years ago started enforcing overseas tour limits for government workers and Sailors. Hard to stay here more than 5-7 years now.

One guy I know with a Thai wife just got forced out here and left yesterday after being here 17 years. They moved to Chiang Mai.

I was medevaced from Manila to Yokusaka Naval Hospital in 1991 for sinus surgery. After recovering a bit, but with a few days to kill before I could fly, I wandered around the town. Ran across a street of bars - I have never, before or since, seen signs at either end of a street full of bars that read "No Whites".

Davis ... You got me to thinking about an area of Olongapo back in the old days that was basically for blacks only called "The Jungle":

1979 was my first visit to the PI and whites could go into the jungle but mostly we didn't. And it seems to me it was mostly because the girls there catered to black guys.

Last time I was in the PI was in 1984. Which just so happens to be the first year I went to Thailand. At the time my then wife was JN and I survived 4-5 days inport without sampling the honeys in either.

I went to Olongapo in the PI more times than I can remember from 1979-1984.

^Cool. My cousin lived in Japan for over ten years teaching English there to the business folk. Married a Japanese lady and they have two gorgeous kids. Now live in Australia. Hoping to visit Tokyo and Kyoto in the next few years.

I spent an evening in Tom Popos, the girls would take you to a curtained area at the end of the bar and at the time I think it was 10K for a bj. You had to finish in four minutes or they'd charge extra, so the sailors would time each other to see who could cum the closest without going over.

A guy would go down to the end of the bar and shout "Start" and everyone else would be counting down the time for him. I thought it was very entertaining, though the next time I went back, it was a memory I was told.

This had to be in the mid 80's I'd reckon.....

there was a similar theme bar in subic in the 80,s prior to piñatubo fucking up a good thing, the bar was called Maralyns and you could indulge in a game of "SMiles" good fun it was, hard to keep a straight face while, loser paid for the drinks and "Smiles" happy days indeed, never found the place called the jungle in olongapo , we just used to hit magsaysay for the awesome live bands, seem to recall there was a similar area in Angeles called second road that catered to the brothers, ventured down there a few times but wasn't made to feel welcome, wasn't really made to feel unwelcome either, the girls would still chat with me but I guess I just wasn't negroe enough. Told em I had a massive Shlong but they didn't believe me, ah well, there loss.

Yes indeed I do remember Maralyns but I think it was in the Barrio wasn't it? Remember the rock bands well too ... if I'm not mistaken there was a place called Genesis that had a band that could cover just about anybody and sound authentic.
