Singapore crowned world's largest container port

Falling volumes of freight could not prevent the port of Singapore retaining its crown as the largest container shipping port in the world, according to new research.

The Journal of Commerce's latest ranking of the Top 50 World Container Ports shows that Singapore has held onto the top spot. However, it goes on to note that China's ports largely weathered the worldwide recession and gained greater prominence among the world's ports.

The report showed that the world's five largest ports - Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Busan - all showed double-digit declines from 2008, according to port reports and other information, including a 13.7 % slide at Singapore.

"Eight of the top nine ports are in Asia and six of the top nine are in China. Only two ports among the world's 15 largest showed any growth in the worst year ever in container shipping and both of those ports, number six, Guangzho, and Number 11, Tianjin, are in China," the JoC reported.
