BANGKOK, 24th March 2018 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce has involved big stores and a fresh-food market in directly purchasing fruit from agriculturists with a target of 330 thousand tons.

According to Mr. Sonthirat Sonthichirawong, Minister of Commerce, the Department of Internal Trade recently held a ceremony for the signing of a contract of cooperation between the Ministry of Commerce and large retail stores, an exporter and an agricultural product market supported by the Department of Internal Trade.

The cooperation is for purchases of fruit from the production season 2018, directly from agriculturists under a government policy for strategic direction of the local economy.

The Ministry of Commerce has always received good cooperation from the nation’s leading retail stores, namely, Tops Market, The Mall, Big C, Tesco Lotus and Makro, and also fruit exporter Shine Forth Co., Ltd. and Talaad Thai market in increasing agriculturists’ channels for fruit distribution by directly purchasing from the growers.

To give confidence to agriculturists and increase channels for fruit distribution, producers will gain additional knowledge on product quality enhancement, appropriate packaging and cultivation planning. As for the purchasing companies, they can make marketing plans well in advance.

The common aim of this cooperative venture is to purchase not less than 330 thousand tons of the fruit of the production season 2018 from all from agriculturists, particularly the kind of product that is available in great quantities, such as durian, mangosteen and rambutan. This will be worth more than 20 thousand million baht in all.

Thus, this project is in accord with the government’s concept of civil-state cooperation in pursuing the policy of marketing-led production. It also induces awareness in support of Thai fruit consumption, especially among Thai and foreign tourists, and stably and sustainably generates incomes for agriculturists.
