State to launch quality taxi services in November

The Department of Land Transport announced yesterday (Aug 3) that it will launch its own taxi services similar to Uber taxi service so as to enable convenience and safety for taxi passengers.

The state-initiated service is a measure of the state to address problems of taxis refusing passengers , overcharging, and refusing to switch to meters.

The new taxi service will employ mobile applications called Taxi OK and Taxi VIP.

Land Transport Department director-general Sanith Phromwong said Taxi VIP service will be superior to Taxi OK with better vehicle and facilities such as in-car WiFi, thus, its service fee will be about 10-20% higher than Taxi OK.

He said the services are expected to be operational in November this year.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith revealed that under the plan, every taxi will be equipped with GPS devices allowing real-time tracking. Surveillance camera and emergency button will also installed in the cab.

With such equipments, which will send all information to the Land Transport Department’s control centre, prompt service and passenger safety will be guaranteed and the problem of service refusal will be solved, the minister said.

Many existing taxis have already joined in the plan and it is expected that by the end of this year, 80,000 taxis will be providing the new improved service.

In other countries this technology is for driver safety. Thailand, it's for passenger safety

    Possible.
It is quite bizarre that the state sees problems in the taxi industry and instead of addressing the problems, goes into competition.
