BANGKOK, 13 July 2016 (NNT) - Livestock associations urge the government to cancel the slaughter duty and fees for the sale of chicken, duck and goose meat. They claim that the duty and fees will lead to higher poultry prices.

Deputy President of the Board of Trade of Thailand Poj Aramwatthana said nine poultry associations had expressed concerns over the animal slaughter control act draft. The law proposes that the government collects the slaughter duty by two baht per animal and the fee also by two baht per animal.

If the law was enforced, poultry farmers and entrepreneurs in the poultry industry would face higher costs which might affect their competitiveness, said Mr. Poj. Consumers would likely buy poultry at higher prices, the vice president added.

The Board of Trade of Thailand and the nine associations confirmed they did not oppose the law since it would help raise the standards of the Thai poultry industry.
