got to have been at least 1.3 million unarmed civilians taken out in Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam. At least. Usually by B52 bombers. My Lai was minor tho still horrific.
Thanks CM.

Thanks for the thread. Great pics. Who gives a fúck if you saw the pics elsewhere, I hadn't seen them before and probably 90% of the readers hadn't either.
Good insight from DK too.
For all the bucolic photos of smiling femine NV women soldiers in the Great Patriotic War, lets not forget the hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese that voted with their feet and got the heck out of the workers paradise A.K.A. the Socialist Republic of Vietnam....
nice one, carry it on if you can
It was war and nasty things happen in the grown-ups world.
carpet bombing was out of order teddy.
not justified nor was there any honour.
shame shame shame shame shame
all that toxic shit also.
Thanks for your brave service. I'm curious about the claims that the Winter Soldier testimony has been proven to be totally false, as I saw the film recently.
I like documentary films, but I see the danger in relying on them for info. I view them as conversation starters, and I'm curious about another view of Winter Soldier.
I have a DVD of these young ladys, Vietnamese generals were amazed that teenage girls got them through enemy lines.
Got any pictures of you in 'nam Boon..? Slinging beans and flipping hash browns
Too bad this thread is dead. This thread embodies the best of what civil discourse should look like
This story will never go away. Mi Lai as tragic as it was is a metaphor of how war brings out the worst in many people. We have seen the results of the returning soldiers who were broken by this war. I wonder how many broken minds there are in vietnam from the horrors they also endured. Vietnam should have served as a beacon why war should be avoided at all costs. Sadly we have not learned the lessons of history and will be condemned to endless war until we do.
A poignant thread. ^ A view that I can share wholeheartedly. It really is a pity that there are/were so many morons on here, among the honest, taciturn and more thoughtful members.
If DK is still alive and kicking with such clarity of thought, I wonder how many of the women in these pics are still around to reminisce?
I grew up watching events unfold as a pre teen, not really understanding why it was such a major part of the nightly news coverage. By the time I left school in 69/70 it was starting to draw down.
News at that time was heavily censored, unlike today, where everyone and his dog gets free rein to explore any wrongdoing. As Hugh says, we still haven't learned the basic lessons.

Is war getting 'better' for those involved in it?
I imagine it was a bit more traumatic in the trenches of WWI when the gases started being used.
And when tanks first came along when the battlefields were still full of infantry.
And when flamethrowers first started being used and you and your mates were being burned alive.
For the allied forces at least, it seems to be a lot less traumatic nowadays when the majority of the forces are at quite a distance to those they are annihilating.
Well ... if you discount most of the Afghan close quarter battle in tiny village bases .... yesOriginally Posted by Minty
