    Nirvana. Live 2025.

They blew up when I was 11 yrs old, and other than my genetics, are as much of a part of me as any thing else. They defined my teens, and if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have taken up the guitar at age 12, my punk-rock band Semtex wouldn't have made it to the dizzying heights of 35 people crowds. 10 family 20 friends. Plus bar staff.

In the last 30 years I believe they regrouped to play twice. One at their Hall of Fame induction. Dave, Krist and Pat + female singers.

They came on as a surprise guest at the LA Fire-Aid concert yesterday.

4 songs, the first 3 with some sound issues, and admittedly not the best front women. Joan Jett did very well, Kim Gordan did well enough.

Their 4th and last song saw Dave Grohl's daughter take on singing duties.

    She absolutely nailed it.

3 hrs 55 mins for the start of All Apologies.

What a moment for Dave to play with Nirvana again, with his daughter singing.

Would have loved to have seen Chris Cornell's daughter Toni sing one or two songs.

This is her singing in tribute to her father just after he committed suicide.

Almost identical to me in terms of music (The Smiths the other one). My mum rang me up at my mate's house when KC died.

    Not the same as me.

Do you remember the fuss after Nevermind was released and everyone was waiting for In Utero? I remember getting it and racing home to put it on my dad's old CD player to be almost as disappointed as 90 minutes watching Poundshop (All Apologies aside).

The furore from the press about Rape Me too?

Nothing could ever touch Nevermind though; it will always be one of the best albums ever.

Gotta disagree with you there, I'm afraid.

    She did a decent job.

Thom Yorke would do it very well though as he would for any of Cobain's stuff IMO.

    While we're here then:

Also the same era and genre

Yeah, massive parts of my life music and football.

Used to sit up listening to music, drinking beer and talking football with my uncle until daft o'clock back in my teens.

    He got me into these:

    As well as JCC:

And that's still more my music style these days along with The Smiths. The west coast snubby movement was enjoyable though and seeing this thread today reminds me of the good times.

I grew up here in Seattle during that era, I was in my prime. I saw Nirvana play at a local bowling alley before they were famous to a crowd of like maybe five people myself and a buddy counting for two, we went to see another band that was playing that night and had no idea who Nirvana were or how they would soon explode on to the scene. There were so many good bands in Seattle at the time, that you lads probably never even heard of, bands like Mother Love Bone, Green River, Gruntruck, Tad, The Melvins, Coffin Break, Mudhoney, The Fastbacks, Hammerbox, The Gits and so many more.

I went to many shows back then, often times going to raging after parties when the clubs closed. I crossed paths with many of those that are big stars today who had no idea what was soon to come, until one day everything was different forever.

So many memories and great stories were had, far more than my lazy ass is willing to type here. Let me take a moment to pause and reflect on people who are no longer here from that era and the few that still are.

That era took a lot of good people too soon, many of whom were not famous but close friends.

Time and memories are a hell of a thing. Sometimes they can be overwhelming, and this thread seems to have unlocked a tidal wave of emotion over me.

I bought 'Never Mind' on cassette, in Patong, Phuket.

    Banger.

Years later I saw Mudhoney supporting Pearl Jam at Hua Mark Stadium.

You have been in Thailand for a long time. You sure about that date, Nevermind did not release until 1991.

Not many outside of the Seattle area know of Mudhoney, but they were a massive part of the music scene here back then.

This might be the first time I've heard this opener from a yank and it doesn't end in a mass shooting.

I got the date wrong. I was first in Phuket in '89.

I must have bought the LP on a later visit. Things are hazier than I thought.

Loads of people outside of Seattle know Mudhoney

I don't know any of the other bands you mentioned. Good time to be a teenager in Seattle.

I first saw Mudhoney in 1995, supporting Soundgarden and White Zombie.

White Zombie blew SG off the stage.

I found 2 photos from that gig.

    WZ.

NoFX were lower down the bill and commented that Nirvana should have been headlining the tour if it wasn't for how things had gone, before covering Territorial Pissings.

Nice job! I'll listen to that album for sure.

Always loved Nirvana, and was really into Pearl Jam too. 'Come As You Are', one of my favorite songs by Nirvana.
Pearl Jam's 'Ten' album I still listen to. Nice pics, Edmond.

    Kurt:

    Ed:

Public Enemy were also huge at the time with their anti-establishment stance.

'91 saw Nevermind, RHCP BSSM, Metallica's black Album, PE Apocalypse '91, KLF The White Room, Pearl Jam Ten etc etc released.

My older sister saw Nirvana support Sonic Youth in August '91 at the age of 16.

They had just finished shooting the video for SLTS, then 2 days later boarded the plane with SY. They were still pretty much unknown. She remembers being at the bar with her older BF drinking and thinking how much energy they had.

These are photos from that gig.

I share those photos because my sister was at that gig, and 3 to 4 years later the seminal, ground-breaking, critically acclaimed punk-rock superstars Semtex took to the same stage on their debut world tour.

They then heading to play Reading '91.

This is generally dsescribed as the happiest time in Kurt's life.

    Fucking hell, Sonic Youth!

I'm on me phone still trying to get out of bed, but I reckon those music threads are getting a hammering when I do!

It's probably a bit too light for you, but were you into Jane's Addiction?

I saw Mudhoney somewhere else too, but I can't remember where. Just wracking what little I have left of my brains to think where.

I would go to so much live music back in the day though. Even more so when I was in Bangkok.

Even though my tastes have moved on since then (arguably), there aren't many better albums than Ten.

The promoter has been interviewed quite a few times and said that he booked Sonic Youth and was told that for 100 quid more he could also get Nirvana. When they all showed up that afternoon he gave Nirvana 10 quid to get something to eat, he met them an hour later and they had spent the 10 quid on a bottle of wine.

One of their friends and a music journalist at the time went to see their promo gig before the release of Nevermind, he couldn't believe what he was seeing and hearing, he recalled them playing Come as you are, and just thinking 'Well, this is it. It's all over, they're writing anthems now'.

The city of Aberdeen officially added the title to their welcome sign.

That's the only album of theirs that I like, and.... really like it. Amazing album, and as with Nirvana at the time, the amazing energy of a great band just breaking. There's a great gig on youtube from the Pink Pop festival.
