it's just occurred to me that there are very few American space rock bands of note. Indeed, are there any? And yet they were the first and last ones on the moon.

No, a split-off from Kraftwerk. Later became "La Düsseldorf".
Did a bunch of promo pics for them, never received a penny for it.
