See Metallica Take Over High School Gym for 'Hardwired' Clip - Rolling Stone

Metallica's video for "Hardwired," the galloping lead track off their upcoming LP Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct, presented a claustrophobic view of the quartet whose members were arranged with their backs against each other. Now the group has released a video showing how it made the clip in a high school gym in San Rafael, California between two basketball nets.

The nearly five-minute making-of clip, which runs about two minutes longer than the song itself, opens with Lars Ulrich feigning annoyance with the volume of a PA near his drum set. It goes on to show how they constructed a circular track to run the camera and how the group interacted with the film crew. The drummer teases some of the staff about how they're dressed – "You guys got the all-black message" – and James Hetfield jokes about a crewmember supposedly sleeping on the job. "Hey, dust roadie: Somebody said there wasn't enough dust," he says. "I'd be worried about my job right now."
Ulrich recently told Rolling Stone how they wrote "Hardwired" as a late addition to the LP. "A couple of months ago, we were sitting there taking stock of the record and thought maybe we should write one more fast, little crazy song, and that became 'Hardwired,'" he said. "It just kind of happened. I think James and I wrote and recorded it in less than a week, which, for us, is basically a nanosecond." The record is due out November 18th.

Metallica will launch an extensive tour next year in support of their new LP Hardwired ... To Self Destruct, and if drummer Lars Ulrich has any say, the metal band will carry on long after it wraps up. "The only unknown is the physical element of it," he tells Rolling Stone. "If the arms and legs and knees and shoulders and throats and all that stuff, the backs, the necks, if all that stays intact, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to do this for a significant amount of time longer."

The four members of the group are in their early 50s, a good two decades younger than the Rolling Stones. "I love the Rolling Stones more than anybody else on this planet," says Ulrich. "Obviously what we do, I'd like to argue, is slightly more physically demanding in terms of the energy that goes into it. Songs like 'Battery' or 'Master of Puppets' or 'One' have this insane physical energy and demand. If you can't play it at the physical demand that it deserves, it's better to not play it than play it half-assed. That's the only unknown. I think mentally we could do this for another 100 years."

Some of Metallica's peers, like Aerosmith, have questioned the wisdom of recording new albums considering the state of the record business. Metallica have a different take. "I hope we go on making records until the day we fall over," says Ulrich. "That's what certainly inspires you and gives you a sense of still being in the game. I certainly respect peers of ours that feel different, but feeling we've still got something to say is an important part of feeling vital, feeling confident and feeling good about yourself."
Hardwired ... To Self Destruct is Metallica's first album since 2008's Death Magnetic. "I think maybe this one is a little punkier in places and maybe slightly less progressive," says the drummer. "It's about the riffs and a bit more groove-oriented. One thing there's not is the big Metallica ballad. It's all pretty uppity."

Take over highschool gym.... ffs, they're foking 60 yrs old for foks sake.

The Seattle show off Binge and Purge is still one of the best rock/metal live shows released on dvd. 1989 I think... almost 30 years ago.

The Black Album is a masterpiece and a wonder of studio production and engineering, Bob Cock the utter tosspot did know what he was doing, in fairness.

Since then... nothing, living off the past more than foking Bob Geldoff at this stage.

I still like the music but I went a bit off them as a band after seeing the doco 'Some Kind of Monster'. They just came across as self-indulgent assholes.

Still good viewing though incidentally, the doco.

Funny, that's a polite expression of what everyone in the music industry thinks of them.

"Master Of Puppets" is their magnum opus, imo. They should have all gone through the coach window after that. -So you could have remembered them in a nice way, obviously.

Doesn't surprise me. What sort of heavy metal band needs to hire a "performance-enhancing coach" and sit around and whinge about their feelings like a pack of wankers.

Saw them once in 1996 with Corrosion of Cockformity. Was okay, good live show but it was just mass produced crap going through the motions than anything else. 20 years ago, to the month I think.

One of my favorite songs...

Watched some documentary especially when James Hetfield was going through some dark stage and that Ulrich come across as an arsehole although he is only an average drummer.

Never really was a fan but I really loved Nothing else matters which they done live with a full orchestra.

without doubt the loudest concert i have ever seen or heard . i used to do light and sound set construction in the 90,s in melbourne . standing in front of house beside the mixing desks , my jeans were vibrating from the bass reverb .

I kelped to set up for Slade in the early 70's and that was the loadest concert I have ever witnessed.

Noddy Holder's voice turned me inside out.

I also worked with Status Quo but they were mild compared.
