    I've decided to buy...

or should I call the thread Move over Eric Clapton?

With the song writing course and the music learning going so well (kinda...), I've decided to buy a guitar. I've done this before, 3 times actually, but never actually got around to playing properly... I've owned 4 guitars before:

One similar to this (not exactly the same, couldn't play it, so gave up and sold it...):

So I tried one of these (couldn't play it so I gave up and sold it...):

A couple of years later I got one of these with a little amp:

Couldn't play it, so I figured something other than me must be wrong and bought a left-handed one in sunburst (I love sunburst...).

Pretty little thing, fuked if I could play it though... Still have them both and the amp in a relative's loft in the UK...

So, thinking that a motorbike in Oman is no good (I'll get one when I get back to Thailand), and needing a hobby, I came across the idea last night of playing the guitar - 5th times a charm! I saw this set in Muscat; like it!

Only 98 rial, that's under 8,000 baht, so jobs a good 'un. Checked with the shop, and they have them in stock; cherry, sounds nice... Went onto the web and did some research, seems the guitar is average at best, and the amp is crap... So, checked the shop, see link here,

    Solid Body Electric

& found a nice guitar and a nice amp that I like:

Ibanez - GRG170DXL BKN Electric Guitar

Decided to go with a left-hander again. Abouuuuuut 6,750 baht. Great reviews, suits a learner...

&, this amp seems to be the dog's bollocks; sound, effects, amp simulator, loads of stuff to play with...

Fender Mustang V2; abouuuuut 5,000 baht; hundred British squids.

Ordered them, and other stuff, coming tomorrow.

    ROCK ON!
    Cycling should be banned!!!

Funny you should say that, I'm increasingly thinking that these little Yam amps are small and mobile, yet brilliant sound. I'll come back to this...

Now in Korea, guitar and amp in Thailand, I'm thinking about getting one of these:

Should be about 10,000 baht. It's a shallow semi-acoustic, not too noisy so good to play in my apartment without an amp. Has good reviews.

Nowse the question, if I get into playing then I'll buy an amp later, but should I get the acoustic version or could I just get the normal elextric version, use it with this guitar, and more flexible to use with me other one too?

THR5A is optimized for use with electric-acoustic and Silent Guitars. Utilising advanced modeling technologies developed by Yamaha, THR5A offers simulations of classic tube condenser and dynamic mics combined with studio-grade effects to create recording-studio tone direct from your guitar and wherever you are.

    OR

The little brother of the THR10, the THR5 offers the sound quality of the THR10 in a more portable form, making it perfect for use at home or when traveling.
Now the THR5 has been upgraded version 2, with an even better sound that defies the convention that sound quality has to be sacrificed in a small amp with a small sound.

Orrrrrr, spend a bit more money and get this one which has a setting for electro-acoustics (might be the best option, but these are quite pricey...):

    CLEAN
Rich clean tones from a 6L6 power section with early breakup for incredible jazz, blues and country sounds.

    CRUNCH
Low-powered EL84 class-A tube output with bright, clear, dynamic power amp distortion characteristics.

    LEAD
Low-gain preamp section and EL34 power section for rich, controllable distortion with great midrange definition.

    BRIT HI
EL34s keep the classic British clarity while a higher gain preamp allows you to push the amp into serious distortion.

    MODERN
Ultra high-gain input section combined with 6L6 output section delivers smooth, powerful distortion

    BASS
High-power all-tube design for dynamic, driving bass tone.
    *THR10 only

    ACO
Electric-acoustic optimized input with mic simulations for natural, clear tone.
    *THR10 only

    FLAT
Flat response clean input for line sources, tone and effect controls allow shaping of non-guitar sources.
    *THR10 only

    ^looks very expensive though...

I want cheap because I'll probably sell/give it away in a few weeks... Hope not. I'd really like to learn to play well this time.

^ thanks, mate. I aim to. I'm gonna choose 3 songs I like and get them sorted within a month. Then I'm gonna: 1) branch into different genres choosing a few songs at a time (hence the amp choice) to help develop a versatile skillset; 2) try to write a few simple songs to kinda get my ear in and better 'feel' the music.

I will NOT give up this time...

If I were you I would forget about the electric option as you can cheat on these things and just play sound, distortion and re-verb and not the guitar.

Buy an acoustic guitar and when you are happy you can play a number of cords cleanly then buy an electric guitar.

Once you can play like this bloke then you can give up your day job.

^ I'm just gonna be playing cleanly through the amp for quite a while, LT - just because I bought an Ibanez what makes you think I'm gonna distort the sound in a groungy/metally way???

The bloody shop haven't got back to me yet, supposed to be sending me an email explaining today's deliver... It's only 10am, but I'm eager; the weekend awaits...

&, I won't be playing like that fella... Just a few clean cords and an easy tune or 3 is the initial goal.

Start with your pentatonic scales, Betsy, and you'll sound like old slowhand himself after a week.

We're away and running; doable even for me...

Please feel free to add any more vids/ideas. I'm going through the basic course on guitar.about.com although I'll be change the practice tunes more often than not... It's a tad bland, so linking in other stuff is nice.

As suggested earlier in the thread (was it Bangyai?) I'll be practicing songs I like...
