Why have my Monitors gone on the Blink ?

My computer has dual 17inch CRT Monitors.

Last week one on the monitors started flickering and upping the refresh rate wouldn't stop it.
After two days it went blank. I assume it is dead.
This week the second monitor has started flickering and again upping the refresh rate won't stop it.
I even degaussed it a couple of times.

The two other monitors in the house are working fine so I presume the electric supply is OK.
So what else would cause two monitors to fail ?
Is it Ok to keep a mobile phone close to a monitor ?

Might try moving the other two monitors to your PC. If the same likely the graphics card/video amps in the PC the problem which would be my first guess. If they work fine, you may have a "coincidental" failure in the current monitors.

Or an EMP attack by the Americans. Did this happen after dark?

My monitor gets moody when the sub woofer gets too close.

I tried a spare monitor, to check out the video card, and it works perfectly but it's an old 15 inch model.

Looks like I will have fork out for a new LCD. Maybe I can go for one big beasty instead of two smaller ones

The smaller monitor likely needs less power from the video amps in the PC. Still might be the amp power is marginal and soon will go completely. If you only use one of the large monitors does it still flicker?

It was fine with one monitor for a week and then today it has started flickering.

Remember the first monitor is now dead which points me away from the card

Well give it a proper burial and buy that new LCD. Your graphics card supports 2 monitors so if have a large enough LCD, likely you can have two screens on one LCD.

You can get decent widescreen 19" LCD's for around 8,000 baht a piece. I use two of those. Saves a lot in electricity compared to running CRTs as well.

I can understand that a wide screen is better for movies but for surfing isn't a 5:4 more useful ?
Take a look at these screen sizes.
    I think a 19inch 1280 x 1064 looks the best size but I'm listening to any advice.

Although I watch an occasional movie on my machine I mostly use the computer for writing code, writing and communication. I bought a 19" Samsung 1280 X 1024 monitor (940n) for around 6800 about 10 months ago. Fonts are sharp I sometimes sit in front of this thing for 16 hour stratches wrting code and usually only experience eyestrain if I keep it up for a week or longer, can't really blame hte monitor for that. no bells, no whistles just an adequate monitor for my needs. If anything, I think I would want a monitor with a higher refresh rate. But those long stretches are just asking for trouble.

The built in speakers in all the low and mid range LCD's I've seen have been crap. Very tinny and very low output volume.

    I find 1440 X 900 on the 19" widescreen ones very comfortable.

So two side by side you've got a 2880 X 900 virtual desktop.

I'd like a 3rd actually, for the full cockpit effect.

22in is the standard size now

19in is old and past it.

    Try finding a Viewsonic.

LCD panel substrates are produced in standard sizes and you can cut more widescreen panels out of a substrate than you can cut 4:3 panels. That's why an equivalent size widescreen is cheaper than a 4:3.
