Republic of Korea seal spot at Paris 2024 Olympic Games in dramatic fashion

For the 11th time in history, the Republic of Korea women’s handball team sealed a spot at the Olympic Games, after sweeping their opponents at the Asian Women’s Handball Qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, including a nail-biting 25:24 win over archrivals Japan, in the last match of the competition.

Five teams lined up in Hiroshima, Japan, in a round-robin format, with the winners sealing the coveted spot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. After the first three games, two teams emerged as contenders, the Republic of Korea and Japan, the two sides which also contested the final at the 2022 AHF Asian Women’s Handball Championship.

Korea started off strong, with a 53:14 win over India, doubling down with wins over the People’s Republic of China, 33:20, and Kazakhstan, 45:24. However, Japan had a better goal difference after their 54:17 win over India and the 50:28 win over Kazakhstan and a 35:18 win over the People’s Republic of China.

That meant that a draw was enough for the last game for Japan, as they had a better goal difference than the Republic of Korea, in the deciding game for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games spot.

Last year, in the 2022 AHF Asian Women’s Handball Championship final, Japan took the game to Korea, with the most decorated Asian team in history bouncing back in the last minutes to force extra-time, where they secured the title.

The scenario repeated itself this time around too, with Japan starting off strong and taking a 5:1 lead after only five minutes, which prompted a team time-out and a rethink for Korea, which eventually managed to keep the gap under wraps, cutting it to a single goal at the break, 15:14.

With everything on the line, the Republic of Korea bounced back, used a 3:0 run to wrestle back the lead, 20:19, but the final 10 minutes of the match were still dramatic. Japan did everything they could, but goalkeeper Joeun Park was superb for Korea, with a 47% saving efficiency, to help Korea seal the win.

A nail-biting match finished with a 25:24 win for the Republic of Korea, which sealed their 11th consecutive berth for the Olympic Games. Japan, which finished second in the competition, will be heading to the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, which are due to take place next spring and decide six other qualified teams for Paris 2024.

World Championships 2023 Baku: Rajeshwari Kumari secures Paris 2024 Olympic quota for India

Rajeshwari Kumari secured the seventh Paris 2024 Olympics quota in shooting for India at the ISSF World Championship 2023 after finishing fifth in the women’s trap final in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Thursday.

The ISSF World Championship 2023 is a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. A total of 48 Olympic quotas were on offer with the top four finishers (one per country) in each of the 12 Olympic individual shooting events securing a spot for their national teams.

Since London 2012 Olympic champion Jessica Rossi, the eventual silver medallist in Baku, had already obtained an Olympic quota for Italy earlier, Rajeshwari Kumari obtained the quota for India by finishing fifth in the medal round. It was also 31-year-old Rajeshwari Kumari’s best result at the shooting world championships.

Rajeshwari Kumari hit 19 of her 30 shots on target in the final. Jessica Rossi claimed the silver with 39/50 and was pipped to the top podium by Lin Yi Chun of the Chinese Taipei, who scored 40/50. Kathrin Murche of Germany won bronze with 28/40.

In the qualifying round, Rajeshwari Kumari came third in a field of 75 after scoring 120 from her five sets. India’s Manisha Keer came 23rd with a score of 115 while Preeti Rajah was 58th with 109. The Indian trio finished fifth in the team standings with a cumulative score of 344.

Rajeshwari Kumari obtained India’s seventh Paris 2024 quota in shooting but it was the first in the women’s trap event. A country can only obtain a maximum of two quotas in each individual event.

PARIS -- As ticket sales for the 2024 Paris Olympics get underway, some online reviewers have begun to raise concerns about what they see as the flaws of a new sales system.
A new ticket draw registration was implemented for these Games, which start in July 2024. Ticket buyers had to enter the draw to access the first two rounds of sales, marking a first for the Olympics. Early buyers are also compelled to buy tickets to more than one event. The first round of sales is underway and the second draw begins on March 15. Single ticket sales opening on May 11.
Some have said that their anger and frustration have been mounting over what they described as a lack of transparency and a lack of affordable options.
In online reviews, the new system has been described as “an absolute shambles” and “a damper.” Others said, “Shame on you” and “that excitement was short-lived."

The Paris committee has a total of 13.5 million tickets to sell, which includes 3.5 million for the Paralympics. Half of all tickets have been priced at 50 euros or less. About 1 million tickets are priced below 24 euros apiece.

“We know that we are going to make people disappointed because you have 4 billion people watching the games, and we have 10 million tickets, so we know that inevitably that there will be people disappointed," 2024 Olympics spokesperson Michael Aloïsio said.
Reviews are mixed, as some events sell out

But sales have been brisk. The organization said that 14 sports had remaining tickets, as of Tuesday afternoon.
“It started extremely strong, and it continues to move every day,” Aloïsio told ABC News.
Stefan Junker, 47, a German fan, told ABC News he was “very happy” he’ll be attending the Games with his wife. He said it felt “a little bit like Christmas” when he got his 24 tickets on Feb. 21.
Self-described super fan Isabelle Zky, who’ll be attending her first Olympics, couldn’t believe her luck.

“I have been a fan of the Olympic Games for 30 years so I only dreamed of being able to attend,” the 46-year-old Parisian said, ecstatically, to ABC News. She said she had a few tickets secured for now.
While there are many happy fans, some regret an overall lack of transparency, mainly about the draw and buying system.
Sacha Lorber, 23, a French national in Australia, said he was proud he managed to buy 30 tickets for himself and his family back in his homeland.
He described his experience as “smooth,” crediting his day-long preparation “to try and understand everything,” but to him, “it always seemed like they were hiding something.”
Lorber said the issues about the buying experience could have been resolved by “providing a simulator” and more transparency, in real time, about the states of the sales in each sport, to avoid having to “hunt for information.” He added that “they campaign the buying process for its inclusivity and openness, hard to see from my perspective.”

Zky said she regretted there was “no national preference” in the beginning. She also criticized the 30-ticket cap per buyer as “a bit excessive.”
The mandatory buying of the same number of tickets in each sport within a pack was an important issue for Aymane Hedaraly, 26, based in Grenoble, and her friends.
    Some see prices as discouraging

Some of the people selected in the initial draw said they experienced a different kind of frustration.
“I have the impression that France does not want the inhabitants of its own country, or the fans even of athletics, to go to the stadium to see,” Maëva Beaujour, who was unlucky in the draw, said.
The 25 year-old said she was profoundly disappointment.

“The whole way of doing things, I find that it does not make sense and does not correspond at all to the idea of opening the games wide,” the sprint, 200 and 400m runner states.
“I think that the target is not the inhabitants of France,” she said, adding that €700 for a ticket as “crazy in the midst of inflation.”

ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships: Germany regains men's K-4 500m crown as 86 athletes secure Paris 2024 quotas for their federations

Germany and New Zealand's K-4 crews and Cuba's Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys were among the big winners on the first day of competition in Duisburg.

Germany reclaimed the highly-contested men’s K-4 500m title on the first day of competition at the 2023 Canoe Sprint World Championships in front of their home crowds in Duisburg, to avenge for a bitter loss to Spain the year before.

It was the same four canoeists in the boat for the championships hosts, but a drastically different result. As a bonus, the gold medal also came with an Olympic quota for Germany.

A total of 86 quotas to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games were handed out on the first day, which also saw New Zealand's women's K-4 crew and Cuba's Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys paddle away with the gold.

Athletes from the top 10 K-4 crews among the men and women obtained quota spots for their National Olympic Committees.

For men's K-4 500m, the quotas went to Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Australia, Lithuania, Spain, Serbia, Poland and Canada.

For the women K4 500m, the quotas went to New Zealand, Poland, Spain, China, Australia, Serbia, Hungary, Germany, Norway and Canada.

EuroHockey Championships Germany 2023: Netherlands bags fourth consecutive title

The hockey powerhouse were in imperious form in the final beating Belgium 3-1 to obtain an Olympic quota for Paris 2024.

Reigning world and Olympic champions, Netherlands steamrolled Belgium 3-1 in the women’s final of the EuroHockey Championships 2023 in Mönchengladbach, Germany on 26 August (Saturday).

The hockey powerhouse won a record-extending 12th EuroHockey title highlighting their dominance on the continent. Germany and England with two apiece are the only other two nations to have won the title since the inaugural tournament in 1984.

The Dutch threw down the gauntlet early on scoring two goals within the first five minutes of the contest. Marijn Veen struck the first blow two minutes into the match after a scrappy tussle in the circle for a flying start.

Freeke Moes, who received the ball inside the circle, then doubled the Netherlands' lead with a fifth-minute strike.

The Belgians did well to stanch the bleeding with an improved defensive effort keeping the Dutch from running away with the match. Their fightback came late in the second quarter when Abi Raye reduced the deficit with a goal in the 23rd minute.

But the four-time Olympic champions proved too strong for their neighbours and restored the status quo courtesy of a Joosje Burg deflecting goal three minutes later. The Dutch went into the half-time break with a 3-1 lead leaving Belgium a mountain to climb.

The two-goal cushion proved unassailable for the Belgians as they battled to get through the Netherlands’ near impenetrable defences. The Belgians were also their own worst enemies not converting when they were in the circle.

    Paris 2024 - Environmental ambition

mainly bollox pr spin oreconomic with the truth

In the face of the greatest challenge humanity has ever known, Paris 2024, the body organising the world’s largest event, is stepping up to its responsibilities. The 2024 Games in Paris will be unlike any other Games in history as they will be both spectacular and sustainable. We encourage energy conservation, innovation and creativity to develop new ways of working and bring about a new era in the organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our goal is to halve the emissions arising in relation to the Games, while offsetting even more CO2 emissions than we will generate. As the Games give us an opportunity to think bigger and see further, we want to help pick up the pace of the environmental transition in sport, regions and major events.

Placing sustainability at the heart of the Paris 2024 project

The world of sport is assuming its responsibilities for the environmental and social challenges we are facing. It identifies the impact it has in order to minimise it as well as encourage and support people and organisations to change the way the conduct themselves. For many years now, the Olympic movement has increasingly taken account of climate and environmental considerations in a commitment that was formalised in the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020.

    i
    Media’s Village
    ×

Building on this momentum, Paris 2024 made environmental responsibility a core part of its bid and now its work. It is through this focus, inspiring us to strive for excellence, that we assess each stage of the project as it develops. Our ambition is shared by many of our partners, including the Paris city council, the IOC, the IPC, businesses, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee and the French Paralympic and Sports Committee. To ensure the legacy of the Games is felt long after the torch goes out, we work with responsible organisations that are environmentally aware.

    Prioritising frugality and utility

Paris 2024 is the first Games in history to devote such scrupulous attention to climate and environmental considerations long before the event actually takes place.

By using 95% existing or temporary venues, we have actively chosen to minimise our environmental impact. Reducing the number of new build projects means we are able to significantly restrict the carbon footprint and give centre stage to the wealth of French architecture by transforming Paris’ most stunning landmarks into sporting arenas.

    Paralympic Village

    i
    Paris Seine-Saint-Denis Aquatic Center
    ×

    Reducing our carbon impact

Where emissions cannot be avoided, Paris 2024 is implementing a voluntary compensation plan across the widest possible scope that even includes the impact international of spectator travel. The projects chosen are spread all around the world and meet the most stringent international certification requirements. Beginning in 2021, these efforts involve carbon capture projects that strive to restore and protect forests and oceans, as well as avoidance projects that, for example, install more environmentally friendly wood burners in homes that still rely on rudimentary cooking equipment.

To take things one step further, we pledge to offset even more emissions than we generate by supporting additional projects in France. We want our involvement to support the development of these local projects, which are still too few and far between given the important role they play in combating climate change, boosting biodiversity and improving quality of life.

    Innovation driving reponsibility

To halve the emissions arising in relation to the Games, Paris 2024 will leverage frugality, efficiency and innovation. Paris 2024 endeavours to identify, trial and develop innovative solutions working with everyone involved to deliver reponsible Games. Such initiatives include using 100% renewable energy during the Games, the circular economy, sustainable food sourcing, responsible digital technology, clean mobility solutions for the Olympic fleet, public transport and environmentally friendly means of transport for spectators, biodiversity protection and water management. Wherever a solution exists, Paris 2024 will offer a springboard to encourage more widespread adoption.

If no such solution has been developed, these Games will spark innovation through the expertise of SMEs, start-ups, the SSE, the regions and all the drivers of innovation that play an important role in the delivery of the Games.

For example, in 2019 Paris 2024 launched a call for proposals in collaboration with the French State for off-grid energy (a backup power solution) in search of innovative ideas that generate little or no pollution and greenhouse gases. As they start to emerge, the first solutions will be trialled in real-world conditions as soon as possible.

A collective effort to step up change

Given the sheer scale of the Games, 2024 represents a milestone for all those looking to pursue ambitious environmental strategies. The Games are by definition a one-off event, but by ensuring the involvement of a variety of stakeholders, Paris 2024 seeks to leave behind a carefully constructed legacy for many years to come.

Having signed up to the Sports for Climate Action initiative launched by the UNFCCC and the Charter of 15 eco-responsible commitments drafted by the French Ministry of Sport and the WWF, Paris 2024 is keen for all those involved in organising sporting events to have a part to play in the success of the Games and ensure we leave our methods and commitments as a legacy to the world of sport and events. That is why Paris 2024 is working in particular with organisations connected to major events in sport and other areas to identify obstacles and best practice.

It is without doubt a sporting movement, but also concerns the State, local and regional authorities, partners, athletes and NGOs. Brought together for Paris 2024 to collectively design a sustainable event that sets an example, all those involved are looking to rise to the challenge and leverage the opportunity to bring about long-term improvements for the climate, sport and regions. Paris 2024 is a broad alliance on shared ambition that will make our dreams become reality.

    Games Environmental Transformation Committee

This Committee supports Paris 2024 with its climate and environmental strategy across the project’s entire scope (carbon impact, biodiversity, circular economy, energy, catering, digital technology, temporary construction, innovation and change management), with a role to provide advice and monitor the implementation of the various commitments. Chaired by Gilles Bœuf, it is made up of nine experts.

Thea Lafond-Gadson sets new national record and becomes Dominica’s first qualified athlete for Paris 2024 Olympics

Dominica’s sporting community is celebrating its maiden qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics, all thanks to the remarkable performance of Mrs. Thea Lafond-Gadson.

The National Triple Jumper’s impressive athletic prowess was on display at the World Athletics Championships in Hungary, where she not only competed at the highest level but also managed to shatter the national record not once, but three times, en route to a commendable fifth-place finish in the triple jump finals.

Her final leap, an incredible 14.90 metres, cemented her position as Dominica’s first qualifying athlete for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. Her initial jump in the Women’s Triple Jump Finals set the tone with a record-breaking 14.71 meters, followed closely by another astounding leap of 14.49 meters. During a post-interview, the sole Dominican to compete at the event stated, “I am really happy and I am really excited and I always say that it is an honor and privilege to represent Dominica.”

Various sporting organizations, including the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) and the Dominica Amateur Athletics Association (DAAA), have all extended their congratulations to Lafond-Garson for her recent accomplishment.

“The Dominica Olympic Committee wishes to offer hearty congratulations to Thea for her performance in the 2023 World Athletics Championships,” they shared in a Facebook post.

Eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao, 44-years-old, is itching to achieve his dream of competing in the Olympic games.

Pacquiao, who retired from boxing in 2021, has inquired about qualifying for the Olympic games in Paris next year.

According to Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, Pacquiao’s camp has inquired about qualifying for Paris.

Tolentino indicates that conversations took place with the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is supervising Olympic boxing.

“Senator Pacquiao’s camp reached out saying our Filipino ring idol wants to fight in Paris,” Tolentino said to Rappler. “But the Senator can no longer vie for qualification in the Asian Games in Hangzhou next month.”

There are some age limitations that Pacquiao would be forced to overcome.

The Asian Games, an Olympic qualifier, has an age limit for athletes of 40 in all sports.

Pacquiao, who’s 4 years beyond the limit, could qualify for Paris through two Olympic qualifying tournaments set in the first and second quarters of 2024.

Tolentino indicates that Pacquiao could also secure a berth under the Universality rule, which the IOC would grant. There are only nine places under Universality at the Paris Games – five for women and four for men.

Pacquiao has actively been competing in exhibition matches. His team confirmed to Rappler that he's willing to fight in the upcoming Olympics and that they have already reached out to Tolentino.

Tolentino also said that the ABAP would welcome Pacquiao to the national team and would assist in his qualification.

Pacquiao is currently scheduled to take part in an exhibition clash with Buakaw Banchamek, a multiple-time kickboxing champion, in early 2024.

Threepeat for Swedish equestrian team at European jumping championships with Paris 2024 quotas also awarded

Ireland and Austria claimed second and third, respectively, with Austria also securing an Olympic quota spot for Paris 2024 along with Spain and Switzerland at the continental championships taking place in Milan, Italy.

Sweden were unstoppable at the FEI Jumping European Championship 2023 in Milan on Friday (1 September) to secure the title ahead of Ireland in second and Austria, third.

That makes it three consecutive gold medals for the Swedes at the championships to add to their Olympic and world titles, with Jens Fredricson on Markan Cosmopolit the last combination to go to secure gold. The Stockholm-born rider also leads the individual event which concludes on Sunday (3 September).

Ireland, led by Michael Blake, ended their campaign just two fences behind Sweden, while Austria not only claimed a Jumping Team medal at the Europeans for the first time ever, but with it, secured a team quota spot for Paris 2024.

Spain and Switzerland obtained the other two qualification spots on offer this week, after finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.

South Sudanese Bright stars have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, a first in the young nations’ history.

This comes after the basketball team easily defeated Angola in Manila on Saturday in their last game of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, achieving the biggest win in the country's basketball history.

Carlik Jones was unstoppable throughout the tournament. He finished the game with a stunning double-double of 26 points and 15 assists, adding 7 rebounds on top, for a whopping efficiency score of 40.

South Sudan needed Egypt to either lose against New Zealand or win by 2 points less than they did. With the Pharaohs not achieving their goal, the path for the east African athletes became clear.

Now, the Bright stars get to shine even brighter in the city of lights.

First Paris 2024 qualification spots claimed at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia

With a revised schedule to beat an adverse weather forecast, racing was fast and furious on a blustery Ada Ciganlija Regatta course on Day 2 of the 2023 World Rowing Championships. While some crews’ hopes of a qualification spot for Paris 2024 were dashed, four boats secured their nation’s places at next year’s Paralympic Games.

The first opportunity for any boats to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic or Paralympic Games came in the heats of the PR3 mixed coxed four, which is proving to be an increasingly competitive event. In heat 1, it was Germany and France who crossed the line and qualified their boats for the Games, and for their A-Final. Great Britain, who have dominated this event for the last decade, won heat 2 but were surprisingly third at the 500m mark behind the USA and Australia before pulling ahead; the USA were second.

British coxswain Erin Kennedy said she was looking forward to the final, adding: “It’s going to be really tight. I think it’s going to be the tightest this field has ever had, particularly over the 2k (course). We’ve got the Americans, the Germans, the French, the Australians. It’s going to be a spicy final.”

In the PR3 mixed double sculls, World Best Time holders, Nikki Ayers and Jed Altschwager of Australia, took the win in their heat with a clear-water advantage over the rest of the field, and set a new World Championship Best Time in the process. They crossed the line in 7:20.93, over 8 seconds faster than the previous time, which had been set in 2017.

In the lightweight women’s double sculls, it was no surprise to see the reigning World Champions from Great Britain win their heat. Romania, Canada, and the USA also won their heats, sending the reigning Olympic Champions from Italy, and reigning Olympic silver medallists from France to the Repechage.

Paris 2024 Olympics shapes up as 6,500 scribes accredited for the Games

With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games set to be held post Covid-19, 6,500 journalists including Kenya have been accredited to cover the multi-sporting event slated to he hosted in the capital of France next year.

Speaking Tuesday in Paris during the opening day of the three-day World Press Briefing ahead of the Games, Jayne Pearce, the Head of Press Operations Paris 2024, told Capital Sport the number of accredited journalists has gone up five times compared to Tokyo 2020.

“We are in a post-covid-19 games, so the interest is almost unprecedented. We are certainly back to pre-covid-19 games. We have journalists wanting to come after the deadline has passed, so we have great interest, so I think these games will be watched, listened and read more by millions in the world through the eyes of the media,” Pearce said.

She added, “The accreditation process is done by the International Olympic Committee of Kenya through the National Olympic Committees, they have a quota system based on the attendance of previous games, the number of requests and at the end we will have 6,500 written press, photographers and non-rights holders covering the event.”

Over 300 journalists physically attended the World Press Briefing while 180 followed the proceedings online representing 50 countries as they prepare to bring the stories of Paris 2024 to the World.

Abraham twins seal Paris 2024 ticket for Chile at World Rowing Championships

Chilean twins Melita and Antonia Abraham sealed a ticket for next year’s Olympics in Paris on a day where qualification for the Games was on the line at the World Rowing Championships in Belgrade.

After the disappointment of agonisingly missing out on Tokyo 2020, the Abraham sisters delivered a quota for Chile in the women’s pair at Sava Lake in the Serbian capital.

Other qualified boats included Romania, Ireland, Australia, The Netherlands and the United States after finishing in the top three in the two semi-finals.

Meghan Musnicki, a two-time Olympic champion in the women’s eight for the US, joined forces with Alison Rusher to come third in the second semi-final.

"Alie did an incredible job, she called an amazing race," said Musnicki.

"We trusted ourselves, stuck with our plan.

    "She kept me on point.

"I couldn’t be more proud of her and I’m super-excited to have qualified this boat for the US for the Olympics.

    "It’s an amazing thing."

Marko Mitrović to coach 2024 Olympics USA men's soccer team

Serbian-American Marko Mitrović will coach the U.S. Under-23 men's team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday.

Mitrović, who steps up after spending a year-and-a-half in charge of the U.S. U19 men's team, will lead the U.S. men in their first Olympics appearance since Beijing 2008. As a result, former U16 coach Michael Nsien will replace Mitrović with the U19 team.

"We couldn't be more excited to have Marko and Michael continue to be an important part of our men's program as both of these teams serve as crucial steps in the National Team pathway," U.S. Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker said.

"During his time with the Under-19s, Marko was instrumental in guiding our rising talents and we're looking forward to him now leading our Under-23 Men's National Team as this age group provides these players with an incredible opportunity to continue their development by facing elite opposition on the world stage and competing for an Olympic world title."

The U.S. men qualified for the Olympics after winning the Concacaf U20 Championship last year. Olympic men's soccer rosters will be made up of players born on or after Jan. 1, 2001, with three over-age exceptions.

New Zealand hammer Fiji to seal men's Olympic soccer place at Paris 2024

New Zealand have sealed a place at Paris 2024 by overpowering ten-player Fiji 9-0 in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Men's Olympic Qualifier in Auckland.

It means New Zealand have qualified for four of the last five men's football tournaments at the Olympics dating back to Beijing 2008, the first edition in which Australia began competing through Asian qualifying.

New Zealand have emerged as the dominant force in Oceanian football since then, with their only absence coming at Rio 2016, when they beat Vanuatu 2-0 in qualifying semi-finals at the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games but were disqualified after the OFC found Deklan Wynne was ineligible to play.

Fiji went on to represent Oceania at Rio 2016 after beating Vanuatu on penalties, but were heavily beaten in their three group matches.

For this year's OFC Men's Olympic Qualifier in New Zealand, the hosts had beaten Fiji 3-1 on their way to topping Group A, but the final played out more in the manner of their 8-0 thrashing of Vanuatu in the semi-finals.

It took just three minutes at the North Harbour Stadium for Riley Bidois to open the scoring from the penalty spot after Luis Toomey was fouled by Nabil Begg.

Caroline Marks wins world surfing title, berth in 2024 Olympics

Caroline Marks looked California-stylish in her pink jersey and dark sunglasses Saturday in her first World Surf League's Rip Curl Finals.

She'll look much more fashionable in Team USA's Stars & Stripes colors next year, when she represents America in the 2024 Olympics in Tahiti, and in the equally prestigious yellow jersey that now establishes her legacy in the sport with her first world championship at age 21.

The former Melbourne Beach resident, now living in San Clemente, Calif., just a 10-minute bike ride from Saturday's event at the famed Lower Trestles wave break, produced a near-flawless exhibition of massive backhand snaps and sprays to convincingly win all four of her 35-minute pressure-filled heats, including a two-set sweep against five-time world champion Carissa Moore, 31, of Hawaii.

"This whole week has been magical," said Marks, before being "chaired" off the beach by her brothers in a wild, celebratory scene.

Sometimes still carrying the "Super Grom" label because of her young age, Marks defeated Moore (who will again be her Olympic teammate) by scores of 17.10-14.97 and 14.60-13.53, capping a day in which she entered as the No. 3 seed in the stepladder finals.

"I was just in the flow today," Marks said. "I had a special day with the ocean. ... This is like my second home."
