Video of Foreign Man Cutting Police Chain Unlocking His Motorbike’s Wheel in Phuket

In a brazen act of defiance, an unidentified male foreign motorcyclist was caught on camera cutting a police chain used to immobilize his motorbike, which was parked in a no-parking zone in Phuket Old Town. The incident, which occurred on Phang Nga Road, has sparked widespread attention after the video went viral on local social media platforms on Friday, April 26th.

The footage appears to show the unknown foreign individual using a large cutter to sever the chain that Phuket City authorities had placed on his motorbike’s wheel. After successfully removing the chain, he gestured for silence to the onlooker filming the event before swiftly departing the area with his vehicle.

According to the person who posted the video, the man opted to purchase the cutter from a nearby shop rather than proceeding to the Phuket City Police Station to settle the fine. This choice has led to public commentary, with some noting that the cost of the fine would have been less than that of the cutter.

Phuket City Police Chief Colonel Pratueng Phonmana has informed The Phuket Express that law enforcement is currently reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify and locate the foreign man for subsequent legal proceedings.

The Phuket Express adds that the act of cutting the police chain constitutes damage to government property, an offense that carries legal consequences far above any fine for unauthorised parking.

In Thailand, the penalties for destruction of government property can be quite severe. While the specific penalty can vary depending on the extent of the damage and the circumstances, it generally involves a combination of fines and imprisonment. For instance, if the damage is significant, the offender could face a term of imprisonment not exceeding ten years or a fine not exceeding five hundred thousand baht, or both.

The community’s reaction to this incident has been mixed, with some expressing admiration for the man’s audacity, while others condemning the disrespect for local laws and even calling for the man to face the maximum penalty of ten years in prison, a 500,000 baht fine, and then deportation. The police are urging anyone with information on who the foreigner is to come forward as they continue their investigation into this defiant act.

I think the concerned citizens might ensure the police give him a right bollocking

just another episode in the anti farang sentiment that seems to be sweeping phuket.
had a thai done this then he would be fined by the courts and sent on his way, but no its a dirty foreign devil and so it becomes a "brazen act of defiance"

and looking at the 10 baht chain and lock, all he needed was a screwdriver to force that lock, no need to buy a stumpy style bolt blaster.

he's not fat enough to be a brit, but he's certainly scruffy enough to be an aussie.

I would have expected no licence plate to be a more severe offence than illegal parking. Removing the chain was just stoopid and he needs a good slap round the face.

It’s not like that chain had any indication on it that it was government property. Perhaps he might argue that he thought thieves had chained his bike…

valid point, but the police will have certainly attached a penalty notice with contact details on the windscreen of the bike that renders your point irrelevant.

You might want to avoid the Thailand based threads.

Or clamped, or locked up, or any other phrase you wish to use.

If you know Thailand you know...that there's no way of knowing for certain.

Is it impossible that the cops just locked his bike with no information at all?

A rhetorical question, but to be clear, the answer is 'no'.

Impounded means taken away, so quite different from 'locked up' or 'clamped'.

It's virtually where the Aussie left it, obviously.

He wasn’t identified as an Aussie. Looks more like your typical Brit Peado Chancer.

Russian Man Arrested for Cutting Police Motorbike Chain in Phuket on a Viral Video

A Russian motorbike rider was finally arrested after he successfully cut a police chain that had locked his motorbike parked in a no parking area and then sped away.

The Phuket City Police Chief Colonel Pratueng Phonmana told the Phuket Express on Tuesday (April 30th) that they arrested the suspect identified only as Mr. German, 37, Russian national, at a house in a housing estate in Chalong. He was a wanted suspect in an arrest warrant issued by the Phuket Provincial Court over an accusation of damaging/removing police property (police chain).

Mr. German admitted to police that he did not have a driving license and had decided to remove the chain. He was afraid if he went to pay the fine he could face extreme penalties for driving without a license like in Russian (He did not mention the specifics on how much fines were in Russia). He bought the cutter for only 500 Baht instead.

Colonel Pratueng told the Phuket Express that there were four similar incidents recently in the Phuket City area. Motorbike Riders who were arrested will be suggested to Phuket Immigration to be deported and to have their visa revoked.

Additionally, the penalties for cutting a police motorbike chain in Thailand could be extremely severe as the chains were considered government property. Damaging government property could see fines as high as 500,000 baht and jail sentences as high as ten years.

In a swift response to a citizen’s alert, Phuket City Police apprehended a Turkish man caught in the act of severing a police chain. The incident occurred in a no-parking zone in Phuket Old Town’s Phang Nga Road.
